French Country Christmas Tabletop Tree

Wednesday, December 21, 2022

Tabletop Christmas trees have become some of my favorite trees, especially when they have French Country flair.  This year the main tree in the house is a tabletop tree in a metal champagne pedestal urn. Cannot get a tree container any more French than that!

The tree sits in the living room atop the blanket box that serves as a coffee table. Not that I ever serve coffee from the blanket box/table. Coffee Table is a description that doesn't really describe the small tables in front of sofas in this time period. In my house.

French Country Christmas | Living Room

Tuesday, December 21, 2021

Both fresh and artificial greenery are primary Christmas decorations for my French Country style home. Built with structural posts and beams, the living room is a vaulted two and a half story space with a soaring cut-limestone fireplace which looks best dressed in understated natural flowers and greenery.

Artificial greenery and faux greenery blend well with live poinsettias, fresh greenery, and a tabletop fresh tree.
Artificial greenery on the mantel and faux paperwhites on the coffee table blend well with the fresh white live poinsettias, fresh greenery in a white crown vase, and a small fresh cut tabletop Christmas tree at the end of the fireplace.

Summer Living Room Blue Decor

Thursday, July 22, 2021

With one major new blue purchase and a little rearranging of existing furniture, the living room has a fresh look for summer. The color scheme is still pale blue, but the room feels brighter, more airy, and more cohesive than before.

Fresh flowers are a guaranteed way of making any space feel brighter during any season of the year. New lavender plants in an old rustic blue box are perfect for my favorite French Country style in July since this is when fields of lavender plants bloom in France.

Allowing the large box to fill the coffee table, with only one French antique fence finial as an accent, keeps the flowers centerstage and the room clutter free. If you missed the last blog post all about the lavender plants in the blue box, see a link at the end.

French Lavender in Rustic Blue Box

Monday, July 19, 2021

When you cannot go to France, bring France to you. French lavender is in full bloom in July in the sunny Provence region of France and fills the summer air with a heady lavender fragrance. Bring that French experience to your living room like I did by filling a rustic blue box with lavender plants.

French Lavender in Rustic Blue Box
July brings memories of walking through commercial lavender fields in France once upon a time. Several years ago my sister, a work colleague, and I traveled to France with an itinerary designed to walk through lavender fields, to visit perfume factories, and to stroll stone streets in picturesque hilltop villages around the fields. We continue to reminisce about that trip and to dream about returning to France to make more memories. With no travel plans in the near future, a rustic box filled with lavender brings a little of France to us.

French Country Christmas Living Room Tour

Sunday, December 22, 2019

A tour of our French country Christmas living room includes views of a massive white stone fireplace and a two-story Palladian window. The tour starts with the Christmas color scheme in the living room which began with a jewel-tone Christmas stocking and coordinating throw pillow.

Jewel-tone needlepoint Christmas stockings and a matching throw pillow set this year's color for Christmas decor in our French country inspired living room. The stockings and pillow came from my sister's shop in Maine more than twenty years ago.

When I bought a purple pillow cover from our new local Pottery Barn outlet this summer, I knew it would go with the needlepoint pillow and stockings. That's when I began planning this year's Christmas decor.

Usher in Spring | White Bunny Arrangement

Tuesday, March 12, 2019

An arrangement of a white marble bunny, artificial white and green flowers, and a white-washed round basket provides just the needed touch to usher in a new Spring.

Spring officially arrives in a only a few days, and we are ready!

The pine chest at the end of the fireplace is my favorite place to add seasonal touches throughout the year. With a handful of objects a new Spring is welcomed this year . . .  in a delightful way.

Winter French Country Living Room

Winter decor in my French Country inspired living room includes an oval boxwood, an oval glass cloche, and a favorite old water bottle.

Vintage Church Pew | French Country Dining Seating

Sunday, January 20, 2019

A vintage church pew provides extra seating for family dinners around a French country style pine table. But extra seating for meals is not the only reason a long church pew is handy to have.

A L-O-N-G simple wood church pew is not easy to fit into a furniture arrangement. A little creative thinking is needed to find a functional, but not in-the-way location.

Winter Living Room Greenery

Winter months can be bleak, but adding live greenery to your living room can keep the inside of your home from looking cold and dreary.

French Inspired Fall Living Room

Fall is in the air in Texas. On cue for October, we have had buckets of rain (October is our rainiest month) and are headed to cooler temperatures with highs in the 50s later this week.

As a new season arrives, I feel the urge to decorate to match the season. Do you? And, the fastest, easiest way to decorate for a season, including Fall, is to add fresh flowers. Nothing can update my French-inspired living room for a new season better than flowers and plants.

Even if nothing else is added to a room, fresh flowers and plants instantly set the season by using ones appearing in gardens at that time of year.

Voilà, instant fresh seasonal decor.

To give my living room a little extra zing this Fall, I used ruffled ornamental kale in a large French-style urn instead of using Fall's usual starring flower, chrysanthemums, as a centerpiece.

Summer French Country Living Room

Saturday, July 28, 2018

Summer in Texas is always HOT, and some summers hotter than others. The past few summers have been mild and spoiled us with temperatures that did not sizzle for prolonged stretches.

But this summer's extreme heat is making up for those mild summer days and is playing a role in how my living room looks this summer.

To help keep my French Country living room cooler during triple digit temperature days, we close the curtains.

This summer has already broken highest temperature records on some days in July, and it looks like we are headed to break more records in days to come.

Living Room Oak Flooring BEFORE Refinishing

One year ago we had our hardwood oak floor in the living room refinished. Our house is thirty years old, and the oak floor has been refinished once before. Yes, it was time to refinish the floor again last year, and this year I am sharing an update on the refinished oak floor.

New Hardwood Floor Refinish Update Before Photo
The original oak floor was finished with a white-wash stain that kept the floor light, but allowed the wood grain to show through. The finish complemented the exposed natural pine beams and rafters in our post-and-beam house.

One of the main reasons the floor needed refinishing was my beautiful black-background wool needlepoint rug had discolored the floor over time... even though there was a rug pad under the rug to protect the floor.

Cone boxwoods on the mantel and a French-inspired lantern with surrounding botanics on the living room blanket box / coffee table are the only new Spring decorations, but the brilliant sunlight announces SPRING to the whole house.

Do you use your coffee table to serve coffee? I do not believe coffee has ever been served from a coffee table in my house EVER. Iced tea... yes. Coke... yes. But, coffee... not ever.

Is it time for us to begin calling that surface by another name? Suggestions for a name to replace 'coffee table?'

Christmas Sparkle Greenery Throughout the House

Thursday, December 7, 2017

Are your Christmas decorations the same style as they were ten or twenty years ago? Or perhaps your decorations have changed like many other Americans' decorations.

What better way to spot old and new traditions than with a Christmas blog tour!

Today is the fourth day of a week long tour, Cozy at Christmas. Katie at Let's Add Sprinkles organized over twenty bloggers to share our homes for this Christmas. Thanks, Katie, for inviting me, and thanks to all of you for visiting. I think you will find some ideas to inspire your Christmas decorations this year.

December is such a busy time of the year, but the hustle and bustle of the holiday month always fills me with CHEER. Earlier this week several Texas bloggers gathered for lunch in McKinney, TX. We had a grand time laughing and catching up with the latest exciting news. There were a few secrets shared about upcoming events for some of the bloggers. I can't wait to see to their secret projects  revealed in the coming months.

Living Room Oak Floor Renovation Finished

Monday, May 1, 2017

The living room oak floor renovation is finished, and we love how it turned out. The room feels so much brighter with the fresh white wash finish, but there are still follow-up things to do.

The living room furniture is back in place, but not all of the room's accessories are back in place. Since all of the furniture had to be moved out of the room for the floor to be sanded, stained, and sealed, this is a great opportunity to make some changes.

Refinished Oak Floor in the Living Room

Monday, April 10, 2017

Upkeep to houses is an never ending task, and updates can set into motion a series of interconnected renovations. That's how refinishing the oak floor in the living room came about at my house. What began as a half bath renovation quickly spread to include a complete update of all the flooring on the first floor of the house.

Yesterday the contractor sanded the living room floor, applied white oak stain, and applied the first coat of clear polyurethane satin sealer.  Here is how the floor looked at that stage. I love it!

Christmas White Poinsettias in the Living Room

Friday, December 16, 2016

White flowers are among my favorite winter flowers with which to decorate. White poinsettias, white paperwhites, and white amaryllis are all beautiful as part of Christmas decorations anywhere, but especially in the living room before the white stone fireplace.

One thing I look at when choosing poinsettias is the center of the colored leaves where the actual flowers are located. The brightly colored leaves are modified leaves, and the tiny buds in the center are the real flowers. I choose plants in which the tiny center flowers are tightly closed in order for poinsettias to last longer.

Just so you know, I refer to the modified colored leaves as blooms like most people.

Fall French Country Living Room

Thursday, October 27, 2016

Country houses come in all shapes, sizes, and designs. In the beginning our house was more American Country than French Country, but the white cut limestone fireplace in the living room and the pine post and beam structure of the whole house are now more French Country than American Country.

Christmas Living Room

Wednesday, December 30, 2015

When the hectic days getting ready for Christmas are over and Christmas Day is past, that's when I like to relax at home enjoying how pretty everything looks decorated for Christmas.

This year is all about greenery with very little ornamentation and very few Christmas lights.  Boxwood, undressed live trees, narcissi, and hyacinths are this year's stars.

Three fresh boxwood wreaths do have some gold and green artificial sprays.  The crystal candle holders are cut crystal glasses with small candles inside another glass holder to keep the glasses from getting too hot.

Most of the fireplace is undecorated, but there is some decoration around the fireplace on the second floor.

The second floor artificial trees have white lights that extend into the grapevine wreath that wraps around the horizontal beam.

A large noble fir tree standing on the outside deck is visible through the living room windows and French doors.

Inside a small live tree sits inside a vintage five-gallon crockpot.

The inside and outside lines are blurred. Sitting in the living room French bergère chair is almost like being outdoors.

The dining room boxwood is visible from all of the living room.

More boxwood is on the dining room china cabinet as well as the blanket box used as a coffee table. In the background is the carved wooden horse wearing his braided rein that has gold threads.

When we first built the house, we could not connect to the community water company and had to drill a well.  The well water has a strong mineral taste.  Therefore, we had water delivered to the house every week, and it came in these large five-gallon glass jars.

As I was decorating the living room I had several things in my hands and needed places to set things down. As I turned around looking for places to set things down, the gold crown in my hand landed on the top of the water bottle just for a temporary spot.

Then as I looked at it, I decided I really liked the crown on the water bottle.

The other side of the living room opens onto the sunspace in the kitchen.

Looking on around the living room to the left is the armoire that holds a small television. The magnolias on top are artificial.

In the foreground on the coffee table are two more artificial white flowers. Hyacinths are potted in small pebbles and look very realistic.  The faux narcissi have yet to be "planted" in pebbles.

The "unplanted" narcissi is another happenstance that I decided I liked.  When I laid them down just to get them out of my hands, I once again decided I liked the results. The gold crown and narcissi just sort of decorated themselves.

The narcissi came from The Magnolia Market in Waco, TX.  Look at how real the floret looks with the four buds yet to open. The candle is Jo Gaines' signature candle from her shop.

Maybe the artificial narcissi will be "planted" in the future, but for now they are just beautiful lying on the table.

This is the view from the French bergère chair.  Yes, I want to enjoy the decorations for a little while longer.

The candles at night add a little sparkle to the room.  Take a quick night tour.

Thank you for stopping by for more Christmas decorations.  Believe it or not, there is still at least one more Christmas tour coming your way.  In a few days I will share how the master bath looks during the holidays this year.  Perhaps you are getting ideas for next year.

Easy Christmas Decor

Saturday, December 19, 2015

Christmas is just days away.  Less than a week away, there is still time to do some easy Christmas decorating.  With just a few changes, including using some of your existing decor, you can quickly take a room from its ordinary everyday look to a room that celebrates the season.

Greenery in Special Pots

The easiest way to add a little Christmas to the house is to add a plant, fresh flowers, or even a dried botanical. Botanicals do not have to be the usual traditional Christmas flowers of poinsettias, paperwhites, or amaryllises. The plants and flowers shown can be found at a grocery store, and the two round botanicals can be found at a craft store.

Choosing a special container adds a seasonal touch.  Compare how the lemon cypress tree in the small black plastic pot looks with how the same size lemon cypress looks in the French design gray vase with its floral garland. The floral swag on the vase is a traditional Christmas look and dresses up the lemon cypress tree.

The little green ceramic pot holds a gold painted botanical wooden ball nestled in a bed of moss. Fill the bottom of the pot with shredded paper so that only a little moss is needed at the top of the pot to hold the round wooden ball.

Adding a little bit of gold, such as the small crown, also dresses up a little green ceramic pot and gives an unexpected special look to a group of plants and botanicals.

A gold filigree-edged wired ribbon takes a small rustic pot from an everyday look to a holiday look. Adding a wooden tag with a Christmas greeting adds even more holiday cheer to an existing potted plant/botanical.

Moss Filled Crown

You may not have a crown like this one, but you probably have an unusual bowl, basket, tray, or box that you can fill with moss and create a similar look that fits your decorating style. Since I love French Country, I use pieces with a French look like the fleur de lis that tops the gray metal crown. If you love American Country, you could use a vintage or rustic box as your container.

Fill the bottom of the container with "mood moss", a type of moss that is mounded, not flat sheets. Add a single small faux plant like the snowdrop.  Finish by adding a small figure such as the concrete bird whose gray color goes well with the gray crown. A small reclining deer would be a good Christmas figure to use instead of a bird.

I like the snowdrop because it is white, but another possible small faux plant to use is a grape hyacinth, also called a muscari. Both snowdrops and grape hyacinths bloom in the midst of winter which means the little moss container would look good all the way into spring.

Pine Cone Filled Urn

Another container that has a French Country design is a pedestal urn. Nothing is easier to use to fill a container than pine cones.  Oversized Sugar pine cones are perfect for large containers.  There are only four pine cones in this large urn.  The dried vines shaped in a loose wild circle provide a transition from the urn to the pine cones.

The pine cones in the white urn go well with the French bergère chair that has fruitwood finished carved curvy legs and white and beige striped linen upholstery. The best part is no watering needed.

Gold Birds and Boxwood Balls

Do you see repeating themes in my decor?  I love birds, and I love boxwood. Oh, and I love bleu.

Another easy and fast Christmas decoration is a shallow white bowl filled with small preserved boxwood balls, gold painted hand-carved wooden birds, and a single faux gold bead and leaves spray. It's another arrangement that does not require watering.

Begin with placing three preserved boxwood balls in a shallow bowl.  Place one floral spray with the boxwood balls, and pull the beaded stems outward so they rise above the boxwood in several directions.

Finish by placing two to three gold birds atop and around the boxwood.  This arrangement took the most time because the birds had to be spray painted gold using Rust-Oleum's metallic gold spray paint.

Sparkly Reins on Wooden Horse

Adding a wreath to an existing wooden carved horse is just one way to dress up the horse.  Another fast, easy way to dress the horse for the holidays is to tie a large braided cord with metallic threads as a rein around the horse's neck.

While red and green are traditional Christmas colors, choose to use a braid in a color that coordinates with your existing color scheme.  The pale mauve braided cord coordinates with the curtains in the living room.  A large satin or wired ribbon could also serve as a holiday rein for a wooden horse.

Decorated Magazine Box

This is a super fast and super easy way to add Christmas decor to an existing item.  First, tie a Christmas gift tag like this birch tree tag to the handle of the magazine box.

Next, add a sparkly gold beaded spray to one end of the magazine box near the gift tag.  Bend two or three of the leaves or twigs over the edge of the box to stabilize the spray, and place the spray inside the box.

Finally, add December issues of your favorite magazines so they are visible with other months' issues behind the December ones. Seasonal catalogs also have beautiful Christmas covers that are fun to display in a magazine box.  Plus, the box keeps the catalogs handy for making wish lists.

With just a few easy decorations, the living room is almost ready for Christmas leaving lots of time for shopping, watching Christmas movies, listening to Christmas carols, baking Christmas cookies, and spending time with family and friends.

Here is a peek at how the living room looks with three of the easy Christmas decor arrangements.

There are a few more decorations to add to the living room, including dressing the fireplace mantel with boxwood wreaths. Stop by in a couple of days to see the entire living room decorated for Christmas.
