T is for Tree

Monday, December 11, 2023

Christmas trees to celebrate the season are the most common Christmas tradition in ways to decorate for the holidays. In the list of 26 Christmas traditions from A to Z, T is for Tree. Trees are so popular that many homes now have multiple Christmas trees.

is for Tree.

Decorated Christmas trees became popular in England during Queen Victoria's reign when her German husband, Albert, introduced Christmas trees in the royal family's Christmas celebrations.

Shortly thereafter the new English tradition was copied by wealthy families in the United States. Each year the tradition spread to more American families.

French Country Christmas Tabletop Tree

Wednesday, December 21, 2022

Tabletop Christmas trees have become some of my favorite trees, especially when they have French Country flair.  This year the main tree in the house is a tabletop tree in a metal champagne pedestal urn. Cannot get a tree container any more French than that!

The tree sits in the living room atop the blanket box that serves as a coffee table. Not that I ever serve coffee from the blanket box/table. Coffee Table is a description that doesn't really describe the small tables in front of sofas in this time period. In my house.

Blue Wedgwood Tabletop Christmas Tree

Tuesday, November 15, 2022

Wedgwood blue Christmas ornaments on an artificial tabletop flocked Christmas tree are perfect to use all around the house. Over the years, the tree has added Christmas cheer to my bathroom vanity, an entry hall table, a living room side table, and the top of the pine chest at the end of the fireplace.

Through the years the collection of blue Wedgwood ornaments was expanded to include white Wedgwood ornaments to create a stunning blue and white Christmas tree.

French Country Tabletop Starry Tree

Thursday, December 23, 2021

A tabletop tree decorated with only star LED lights and a 3-D glass ornament topper is one of my favorite Christmas trees to use in my French Country inspired home.

The Best Christmas Greenery Idea | Tree Slice As A Wreath

Wednesday, December 9, 2020

The best Christmas greenery idea I have had in decades occurred to me when I thought of cutting a fresh Christmas wreath from a small evergreen tree. A slice from the middle section of a fresh Fraiser fir tree makes an excellent wreath already arranged in a circle.

Best Christmas Greenery Idea is a slice from the tree as a wreath
You can use a tree slice as a wreath on a door or window, but another way to use a wreath is as a base for a greenery arrangement in a beautiful ceramic container. Instead of using the greenery vertically, the tree slice fills a large footed ceramic urn.

Bird's Nest in Christmas Tree | Table Top Tree

Monday, December 7, 2020

A German folklore promises good health and prosperity to one who finds a bird's nest in her Christmas tree. Who could not use good health and prosperity in the upcoming year after this year filled with uncertainty in both? To my delight I found a real bird's nest in the fresh-cut Christmas tree I bought at the local home improvement store's garden center.

This year's table top tree in the garden shed is decorated with glittered bird's nests, silver preserved eucalyptus sprigs, and silver metal stars with rhinestones.
Each year at least one small table top Christmas tree is part of the season's decorations in my house and in my small garden shed. Instead of buying a small table top tree from a tree lot, I buy a 4'-5' fresh-cut evergreen tree to cut the top off to use as a table top tree. Then I use the rest of the tree for fresh greenery in flower arrangements, garlands, wreaths, and sprinkled in Christmas decor.

How NOT To DIY Flock A Christmas Tree

Monday, November 9, 2020

A few years ago I learned how NOT to DIY flock a Christmas tree. In case you would like to flock a real tree or a faux tree, you may find a few tips from my experience to save you time, money, and energy.

November is the time to buy artificial flocking snow to DIY a flocked Christmas tree

Now is the time to buy the artificial snow before suppliers sell out for the season. You can wait until later to actually apply the DIY snow, but if you wait to buy supplies until you are ready to flock your tree in December, you may not be able to get the artificial flocking snow.

Christmas to Winter Decor | Nordic Inspiration

Saturday, January 25, 2020

As the new year began, Christmas faded into the past, but some holiday greenery lingers at my home as Nordic-inspired Winter decor. Live spruce tree seedlings on the kitchen island were part of the kitchen Christmas decor, and are now sprouting new growth from the warmth in the house.

French Country Christmas Living Room Tour

Sunday, December 22, 2019

A tour of our French country Christmas living room includes views of a massive white stone fireplace and a two-story Palladian window. The tour starts with the Christmas color scheme in the living room which began with a jewel-tone Christmas stocking and coordinating throw pillow.

Jewel-tone needlepoint Christmas stockings and a matching throw pillow set this year's color for Christmas decor in our French country inspired living room. The stockings and pillow came from my sister's shop in Maine more than twenty years ago.

When I bought a purple pillow cover from our new local Pottery Barn outlet this summer, I knew it would go with the needlepoint pillow and stockings. That's when I began planning this year's Christmas decor.

Silver Sleigh Bell Christmas Tree

Tuesday, January 1, 2019

Wallace silverplated sleigh bells and crystal glittery stems are the only ornaments on this year's fresh-cut Noble fir Christmas tree.

Christmas Day is past, but the twelfth day of Christmas, January 5,  has not arrived yet which means Christmas festivities and decorations are still part of our winter holiday.

Inspired by Wallace sleigh bells, the fresh-cut Christmas tree is minimally decorated with sleigh bells and crystal stems. Evergreen, without lights and only minimal red touches, the tree will stay up until the weekend of the Twelfth Day of Christmas.

Christmas Rosemary Trees on Kitchen Island

Wednesday, December 20, 2017

Fresh greenery always makes me think of Christmas, and nothing smells more like Christmas than a live rosemary tree. Three of them on the kitchen island triples the fragrance of Christmas, the feeling of Christmas, and the look of French Country noël.

Christmas Sparkle Greenery Throughout the House

Thursday, December 7, 2017

Are your Christmas decorations the same style as they were ten or twenty years ago? Or perhaps your decorations have changed like many other Americans' decorations.

What better way to spot old and new traditions than with a Christmas blog tour!

Today is the fourth day of a week long tour, Cozy at Christmas. Katie at Let's Add Sprinkles organized over twenty bloggers to share our homes for this Christmas. Thanks, Katie, for inviting me, and thanks to all of you for visiting. I think you will find some ideas to inspire your Christmas decorations this year.

December is such a busy time of the year, but the hustle and bustle of the holiday month always fills me with CHEER. Earlier this week several Texas bloggers gathered for lunch in McKinney, TX. We had a grand time laughing and catching up with the latest exciting news. There were a few secrets shared about upcoming events for some of the bloggers. I can't wait to see to their secret projects  revealed in the coming months.

FIVE Tips for Buying Live Christmas Trees

Fresh live Christmas trees usually go on sale in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex around the day after Thanksgiving. I was a little surprised and a lot excited to see live Fraser Fir trees for sale at the local Lowe's the Sunday BEFORE Thanksgiving.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Then on Friday, find your perfect live Christmas tree.

Fall New Red Oak Tree

Friday, November 3, 2017

Funny how the mind works. How memory works. Some images are burned into my memory, lovingly cherished or sadly remembered. Then there are the memories easily supplanted with new ones to take their place....

A New Red Oak Tree

has surprisingly made the thoughts of losing two big old oak trees easier to bear.

Eiffel Tower Christmas Tree

Thursday, December 22, 2016

During the holidays everything seems to be going according to plans, then... out of left field (or the North Pole) comes another idea. One you had not planned. Or you think you had not planned. One that just happens. A magical Christmas moment.

Could it be the tree has been in the wings for years, just waiting to fly?

Country Christmas Tree Memories

Country Christmas Tree Memories

What one thing symbolizes Christmas in your house? Something that is always part of your Christmas celebration? Beginning with your earliest memories in childhood, what one thing has always been part of every Christmas in every house you have ever lived in? What is that one item that must be included before your house is truly ready to celebrate Christmas?

For me, the answer is....

a Christmas tree.

This fall, Carole of Garden Up Green asked some of us who live in the country to share something from our homes that reflects a country Christmas. Perhaps a recipe, a decorative display, something passed onto to us, or even what life in the country means to us. Whatever we selected should reflect a memory with sincere heart because country living is like no other, and at Christmas, country living is even better.

Stars, Trees, Angels in the Christmas Master Bath

Friday, January 8, 2016

The twelve days of Christmas come to a close on January 6, 2016 and so do the Christmas decorations in my house.  Some people remove all their Christmas decor on December 26, some by New Year's Day on January 1, but following the tradition of French Christmas celebrations, my decorations remain until Epiphany, January 6.

Christmas in the Master Bathroom

includes stars, trees, and angels.

In keeping with the rest of the house, the Christmas decorations in the master bathroom focus mainly on natural greenery with a few golden accents.  The mostly unadorned tree leans in the ceramic wastebasket giving a relaxed country feel to the tree instead of a more formal look.

The small live tree has just one decoration, a large glass star at its peak.

Wired gold ribbon ties the three-dimensional star to the top of the tree's main branch.

The bow and the ribbon tails that flow outward maintain their positions perfectly due to the wire. Using a narrow ribbon allows the star to "shine" as the focus instead of being overpowered by a wide ribbon.

By placing the tree in front of the mirror, the greenery and star are doubled by their reflections.

A ceramic wastebasket holds the tree and plenty of water.  The wide rim of the wastebasket keeps the tree securely in place.

As always, a little French inspiration. The wastebasket is designed for the bathroom, Luxe Pour la Maison Le Bain Paris (luxury for the home bath).

A trio of golden angels made from natural materials stands around the tree, but there is still lots of room on the vanity for everyday activities.

The gift box is not merely decoration. It holds receipts for Christmas presents. By keeping the box on my vanity, the box is handy for me to immediately place receipts inside before I have a chance to put them in another "safe place" never to be seen again. Everyone knows not to open any Christmas packages, so the receipts remain undisturbed until needed or until discarded after Christmas. When I started doing this, it saved me lots of time and frustration searching for receipts.

A set of purple seasonal towels hanging above the bathtub goes well with the framed bouquet of French lavender. The embroidered trees are silver colored like the frame for the lavender. Sometimes the best finds happen when I am not even looking for them. While shopping for towels for a friend for Christmas, I happened across this set that are perfect for my master bathroom. My friend received a different design and colors for her bathroom.

The Christmas balls on the tree are bleu, the perfect shade to match the bead board walls.

Christmas is drawing to a close for this year, but I believe Christmas is a way of life for all year, not just during the traditional holiday season. So even though the ornaments are put away and the greenery is removed, Christmas lives on in my heart.

I will honor CHRISTMAS in my heart and try to keep it ALL the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

A Red Truck with a Green Tree

Sunday, December 6, 2015

For some reason the color red immediately brings Christmas to mind.  Add red to any scene, and the scene becomes Christmas.  Make that a red truck, and the Christmas factor soars.  If the red truck has a green tree in its bed, Christmas shouts from the rooftops of the mind, "Merry Christmas!"

Add the scent of rosemary to chase away any thoughts other than Christmas.

Add a few dents here and there to the truck, and Christmas in Texas comes to my mind.  Trucks for working ranches, farms, and construction sites are the reasons for trucks in Texas.  Not city-slicker trucks with chrome bumpers parked in front of a luxury hotel in New York.

Red trucks with 200,000 miles on their odometers travel two-lane backroads hauling needed supplies. Jolting along over potholes, gravel, and mud, the ride is not easy on the passengers, the cargo, or the truck.

Yepper, an old dented red truck hauling green rosemary trees in its bed says, "Christmas in Texas."

More Christmas in Texas is coming your way all week, Dec. 7 - 11, 2015.

New Year's Sparkle

Wednesday, December 31, 2014

This year's New Year's sparkle is mainly Christmas sparkle on the second floor.
While this year's Christmas decor on the first floor focused
on natural greenery with minimal other decorations,
the second floor's Christmas decorations are a bit showier,
with a lot more sparkling lights.

In reality, these two artificial trees decorated with aviary themes
remain up and decorated year round.
Sparkling fairy lights ablaze any night of the year...
The trees sit on a wooden landing outside of the
railings of the hallway and the loft over the dining area.
The trees are not in the path of the hall nor
in the space of the loft.

The decorations on the two trees include birds, nests, eggs,
feathers, and bird houses collected over several years.
Many are gifts from friends and families.

Some of the bird's nests are homemade.
One year I made bird nests using
a honeysuckle vine from the back yard.
The vine still was blooming and had some unopened buds.
What a wonderful surprise when the buds bloomed on the tree!
A little natural sparkle that year...

There is also a grapevine that winds around an overhead open beam
decorated with fabric roses and fairy lights.

This photo gives a little better view of how the trees,
a birdcage, and a swan sit outside the railings.
The large birdcage is from my sister's florist/gift shop
she owned in San Diego, California before moving to Texas.
The grapevine swan is from Decorator's Warehouse
and was bought during an after Christmas sale many years ago.

Usually the wooden horse sits next to a railing at the top of the stairs,
but there is a live Christmas tree there now, and the horse
moved to this chair along another railing.

The horse was made to look like a weather vane, but is for indoor use only.
It was found at a local gift store in New Hampshire
about twenty-five years ago.

This view shows the live Christmas tree decorated with only twinkling lights
that is at the top of the stairs.

These first seven photos were taken from the loft that
overlooks the living room and is above the dining area below.
Here you can see both artificial trees and the live tree.
The space between them is the entry into the loft.

The blinding light is a skylight.
Ribbons from the sloped ceiling suspend glass balls,
silver bells, and silver colored reindeer
that also stay up year round.

Over the years some of the suspended ornaments have been
replaced with different ones, but the reindeer have always been the same.

This view is from the hallway with a better look
at the rose decorated grapevine.
The loft is to the right and the stairs down are to the left.

Our house is in the country surrounded by trees.
Two sides of the property are bordered by streets,
and two sides are bordered by neighbors.

Every year people all around celebrate with fireworks
since we live in the country and have no restrictions against fireworks.
There is always lots of merrymaking beginning at twilight
and lasting way past midnight.
Yes, lots of
*s*p*a*r*k*l*e*
every New Year's Eve.

One New Year's Eve I was sitting at my desk on the second floor
and could hear the usual whizzing, popping, and loud bangs
of firecrackers, bottle rockets, and other fireworks exploding.
The desk looks out into the woods toward one of our neighbor's land
that has had as many as three trailer houses on the two acres.

Occasionally I looked up into the night sky hoping
for colorful explosions that accompany some fireworks.
When I saw bright reds and yellows above the treetops,
I thought I was seeing colorful fireworks.
Then it dawned on me that this was not fireworks.
No. Something was on fire.

Immediately I dialed 911 to report the blaze,
and the operator said firetrucks were already enroute.
One of our neighbor's trailers burned to the ground.
Not from fireworks, but from a heater.
No one was home in the trailer when it burned.

That was the year of an extra dose of
*s*p*a*r*k*l*e*
on New Year's Eve.
Fire truck sirens screaming with lights rotating and flashing,
curiosity seekers' car lights lighting up the sky,
and red and yellow flames shooting above the treetops.
We were outside watering down our property with garden hoses
to make sure the fire did not spread through the woods to us.

Way too much sparkle that year...

Soon the second floor live tree will be taken down, but
most of this New Year's sparkle will remain sparkling
all during 2015.
Fairy lights can sparkle any night of the year.

Any sparkle on New Year's Eve at your house this year?

Christmas Beautiful Idea #4 Unadorned Tree

Monday, December 8, 2014

Welcome to the fourth in a series of posts with some ideas and tips I think are
Christmas beautiful ideas

Christmas inspires beauty in many ways.
Heart rending songs, movies, and religious services
create memorable scenes that often become embedded
in our collective memories and become yearly Christmas traditions.

One of the most loved beautiful traditions in towns all across America
is lighting a towering Christmas tree filled with thousands of
twinkling electrical lights that replaced lighted candles of yore.

However, with mass global social media networks,
unadorned evergreen trees from the Scandinavian countries
are quietly gaining popularity elsewhere.
For the past couple of years, I have been drawn
to the simple elegance of an unadorned beautifully shaped tree.

Christmas beautiful idea #4
unadorned evergreen tree

Well, this is almost an unadorned tree.

A lone handmade paper angel hangs from the tree's center spire.

I adapted directions for an angel ornament from Martha Stewart.

A friend asked this week if this is a real tree.
Yes, this is a real tree.
Beautiful shape, dark green color, and lush branches.
If only you could smell the fragrance!

The tree came with a plastic tree stand attached to its base,
but that look wasn't what I envisioned on my dining table.
Using a vintage handsaw, I freed the tree from the plastic,
and upgraded its stand to this white metal urn.

Now, this is the base that befits the regal little tree.
TIP:A plastic cup from a fast-food restaurant is just the
right size and shape to fit inside the urn
to hold water for the tree.

Last year, an almost unadorned tree decorated the breakfast sunspace.

A natural evergreen looked more country
in a galvanized bucket on the front porch last year.

Most years there is a decorated tree in the breakfast sunspace or living room or both places.

An undecorated live tree fits in with the wood ceiling, posts,
wood paneling and country pine table.

What do you think?
Is an unadorned tree in your plans this year?

If you missed the first three posts in this series,
you can find them at
