Bulletin Board Inspiration No. 6 | Navy and White Rabbits

Sunday, April 17, 2022

A Paper Series Post

The latest bulletin board inspiration features a gorgeous, fluffy white rabbit in navy and white. Rabbits are symbols of spring, and a clipping of a white rabbit on a navy bulletin board is a beautiful reminder of Easter.

Bulletin boards often include a collection of clippings without a planned layout, but in my series of bulletin boards, I share suggestions and design principles for creating boards with a theme. Part of each post in the bulletin board inspiration series is how-to information for my boards to help you create your own boards.

Bulletin Board Inspiration for Spring and Easter
Bulletin boards are an easy, economical way to decorate for each season and/or holiday in the year. As I was creating this latest bulletin board inspiration for Spring and Easter, I began to wonder how rabbits came to be symbols of Easter and why Easter bunnies deliver eggs for Easter egg hunts.

French made candy Easter eggs were the stars of my Easter baskets this year. Gourmet candy made in Paris, France is world renowned, from small exclusive chocolatiers to large department store maison (house) specialities. French made candy is a treat any time, but French Mèdicis candy eggs are special delights at Easter for anyone who receives them.

Shake up a traditional roses and tulips arrangement by adding non-traditional greenery from your yard. Oak leaves and sprigs of mint add interesting shapes, textures, and fragrance.

Variegated lantana in shades of pink and yellow on the same flower head coordinates with both the pink tulips and pale creamy roses.

Set an iron bunny tied with peach, lavender, and yellow ribbons at the base of the flowers to hide the flower stems in the vase and to repeat the flower colors.

Natural Grass Easter Table Setting

Friday, March 25, 2016

Natural blooming prairie grasses grow in our pastures,
along side the roads, and in our yards here in the Texas countryside.
After blooming for a short time in late Winter to early Spring, their flowers will fade,
and the plants will go dormant to survive the long hot months to come.

Wheat Grass Basket with French Script Ribbon

Sunday, March 13, 2016

Pretty centerpieces should not be created only for company.
Living each day with joy calls for enjoying beauty in the everyday,
not waiting for something special to happen to enjoy the moment.
Instead, enjoying the everyday moments makes something special happen.

Laughter... smiles...feeling good...

The French refer to enjoying life as joie de vivre,
the joy of living.

While shopping for groceries recently, I spotted
fresh wheat grass growing in small square plastic pots
in the fresh produce section,
and immediately placed one in my shopping cart.

Did I know how I was going to use the grass?

NO.

I knew I was NOT going to eat the grass or cook with the grass.
Do people eat and/or cook with wheat grass?
My cats love eating grass and have been caught nibbling on this grass.

The grass just made me happy.
Made me think Spring, Easter, and Easter egg hunts,
as I whisked my little shopping cart around gathering groceries.
My mind turning in its own directions as the cart turned down the aisles.

Easter baskets... !
Stop the grocery basket and think Easter basket with wheat grass.
You know, an Easter basket with real grass instead of fake paper grass.

Wheat grass sitting in an old battered basket
that once had been an Easter basket makes me happy.

The old Easter basket most recently
had been hanging around on the kitchen pot rack above the island,
but was the almost perfect size to hold the square of wheat grass.

That is the beginning of a Spring basket on the breakfast table
just for everyday, not for a special occasion.

One thing led to another as my mind continued to turn in its own happy directions.

Add the white tulips from last week, and keep the pottery coasters handy
for sitting iced tea and cokes on so as not to make rings on the table,
and
sit the little bunny with French script and lace near the basket.

Still more of the 'one thing led to another.'
The little black plastic square holding the grass was not very pretty.

But, I do have some very pretty 3-inch wide muslin ribbon
hand-stamped with French script and spangled crowns.

The ribbon is the perfect height to hide the black plastic container that
was stealing some of my joie de vivre

Voilà
There you have it...

... a wheat grass basket with French script ribbon and bunny
as an everyday centerpiece.

Just for the fun of it.
Just for the joy of living....everyday.

Evolving Easter Vignette - When Is It Finished?

Friday, April 3, 2015

When creating a table top vignette,
where do you begin, and where do you stop?
When is the vignette the final version?
Finishing a centerpiece is often the hardest part.

What recently began in my mind as a white vignette
turned into a purple one as seen in The Color of Easter
Yet, I still had a white centerpiece forming in my mind
because white has been enticing me, calling to me as a siren.

However, blue, beloved bleu, continues also to call to me.
Since I've been collecting blue for many years,
many beautiful blue things have found a home with me.

B L U E
symbolizes
trust,
loyalty,
and
confidence.

When I survey my mind trying to recognize
what are the things I value, hold dear, and seek,
trust and loyalty are at the top of the list.
My deepest sorrows have been caused by people
who broke their trust with me
and who were not loyal.

Yes, I love bleu for how beautiful it looks to me,
but I also love bleu for its symbolism.

So, as I rearranged the kitchen counter,
a blue and white grouping took the place of the purple setting on the island.
Not a hard thing to do, just move pretty blue things together like...
the kitchen towel with the blue bunnies,
a clear vase with blue speckled eggs,
and a tiny little frosty blue bunny.

The dear little bunny came from Goodwill
and sits someplace visible all year,
moving from spot to spot.

As much as I enjoyed the blue and white,
an all-white grouping kept nagging at me.
The only way to quiet a nagging is
to do something about the reason for the nagging.

Out came the white pitcher, the white creamer, and
a smiling white iron doorstop bunny holding a basket.

The basket holds flowers, not eggs.

Four-inch bedding plants surrounded by preserved moss
add height and a touch of nature.

A little touch of bleu speckled eggs just had to fill the creamer.
A white cotton hand towel with embroidery rounds out the white grouping.
Five items inside the white wicker basket.

So, is it finished now?

Not exactly.
The redbud branches still have a few days of beauty left in them.

The white vignette will truly become all white
(almost white except blue eggs
when the redbud blooms die.

Then, it will be finished.

How did I know when to stop adding items to the grouping?
The question is answered by what went into the grouping.

1. Texture - White wicker basket, preserved moss, hand towel
2. Movement - Tall flowers, medium height bunny, low creamer
3. Theme - bunny, eggs for the season
4. Color - shades of white, monochromatic scheme
5. Number of items - an odd number
6. Focal point - bunny: focus created by central place,
pitchers pointing toward bunny, oblong flower vase
angled behind bunny, towel leads to bunny

Once I had all six of these elements,
I knew the grouping was completed.

of how to create vignettes.

The Color of Easter

Sunday, March 29, 2015

What is the color of Easter?
When you think of Easter what color do you see in your mind?
Do you see fresh green like new sprouting grass and leaves?
Or perhaps you see white as in Easter lilies?
How about the yellow of daffodils and baby chicks?

For me, purple is the color of Easter.

The purple of creeping phlox that appears in early spring
planted in masses on slopes signals Easter is approaching.
My grandmother grew purple phlox that was prickly.
Prickly purple phlox.

Whenever I see it,
I think of my grandmother who loved to grow flowers,
and I think of Easter.

Redbud and phlox purple remind me of ...
Easter with the extended family gathering for
lunch with ham as the main dish.
Easter with our baskets to look for Easter eggs
and with deviled eggs on the lunch menu.
Easter with new clothes to wear to church services.
Easter was always a big day for the whole family.

The color of purple phlox that is the same color
of redbud trees - that's the color of Easter.
My mother and grandmother always dyed several colors of
hard-boiled eggs for our Easter egg hunts in the yard.
There were always purple eggs to find and to put into our baskets.

The rye grass and irises beneath the redbud in my yard
would make great places to hide Easter eggs.

Redbud trees grow wild in the woods of North Alabama.
Redbuds do grow in North Texas, but not in the wild.
However...
We planted a redbud several years ago and two volunteer redbuds
appeared in our yard a couple of years later.
Something about trees and flowers self-propagating makes me happy.
Somehow those plants seem more special,
like they picked us to live with,
rather than the ones I've planted that weren't given a choice.

As I looked out at the redbuds, I decided to bring several branches inside.
At the same time, I was thinking about a vignette of whites for the kitchen island.

The plan was to put the blue speckled eggs in white bowls, to use a white pitcher,
and to arrange white flowers on the white wicker basket.

Then I spotted these two shades of purple bowls while shopping.
I picked them, put them down, walked around, and picked them up again.

All the while thinking about

redbud trees, creeping phlox, and Easter.

The white vignette turned itself into a purple vignette,
but was still arranged in the white wicker basket.

The only new things are the purple bowls
and the jelly beans.
Everything else are things I've had for several years.

Leaping purple hares on a kitchen towel leapt right into the bottom of the basket.

A pale yellow iron bunny was already dressed
in the pastel seam binding ribbons that
are the perfect colors to pull everything together.

Jelly beans, along with chocolate bunnies,
were always in our childhood Easter baskets.

Even now in retirement years, I assemble an Easter basket
for my sister that always has chocolate.
The basket is not always a traditional basket.
Flower pots, decorative boxes, and gift bags are all
good alternatives for filling with Easter treats.

Raspberry, strawberry, orange, lemon, and peach cremes
are the flavors of the jelly beans.
Arranged in a simple clear floral vase,
the visible jelly bean colors contrast with the purples
and coordinate with the pale yellow iron bunny.

In the background is another kitchen towel with bleu bunnies
hanging on the oven door handle.

What is the color of Easter at your house?
