A French-Inspired Garden and Home by Judith Stringham

French Country Christmas Event 2019

Friday, December 6, 2019

The ninth annual French Country Christmas Event is on two Saturdays, December 7 and December 14, in my backyard French country style garden shed. If you are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, take a drive into the countryside to shop in a seasonal pop-up shop filled with home and garden French-inspired decor.

Do you love wood, metal, glass, fabric, paper, but not plastic or resin so much? Yes? So do I.

In this age, it is harder and harder to find beautiful things made with wood instead of MDF, glass instead of resin, cotton, wool, or linen instead of polyester. But, all those natural materials are what I seek out to stock my French Country Christmas Event each year.

Take a tour of how the garden shed is decorated for this year's Christmas event. Most of everything shown is for sale, with the exception of some display furniture.

I love collecting beautiful, natural material things all during the year to offer as an alternative to big stores.

The ugly-duckling-turned-white-swan garden shed is filled with beautiful things, small to large, that pass the test ... "Would I love this in my own home?"

French Country Christmas Event 2019 faux paperwhites in a French wire basket
Regular readers will recognize the French wire basket from my house. I use one all during the year, from spring flowers on the kitchen island, to holding linens in the recently renovated laundry room, to holding Christmas presents on the church pew.

Here the basket holds paperwhites, a staple each year at Christmas in my house. Usually I pot live paperwhites to force into bloom for the holiday season, but some of my friends do not like the flower's fragrance. These artificial paperwhites are perfect for them.

French Country Christmas Event 2019 is in the garden shed with a large skylight overlooking a Christmas tree
Ignore the tape measure and plastic bag of screws (used for getting everything ready for the event) and notice the White Scroll embossed flatware. A new favorite for using with my white dishes, the flatware has embossed aluminum handles and stainless steel eating parts.

French Country Christmas Event 2019 offers white round marble boards
The round white marble slabs are perfect for serving cheese and cracker appetizers during the upcoming holiday parties.

French Country Christmas Event 2019 has several Christmas ornaments hanging from the ceiling surrounding a fresh cut tree in a white pedestal urn
I love fresh greenery for Christmas decorating, and the little tree is a table-top tree from a local home improvement store.

I plan to re-use the tree in my house for an upcoming December Book Club meeting in my own white pedestal urn like the one shown for sale. One of the fun things about decorating a shop is sharing ideas with others for decorating that they can replicate in their own homes.

The urn and all the ornaments are for sale.

French Country Christmas Event 2019 has jewel glittered stems around the base of a fresh cut tree in a white pedestal urn
One of the items my customers loved in years past is a jewel glittered stem, surrounding the base of the tree.

French Country Christmas Event 2019 has jewel glittered table top trees that coordinate with the jewel glittered stems around the Christmas tree
There are companion jewel glittered trees in two heights this year. I first saw these offered by Pottery Barn five years ago, and loved them!

I was so excited to find a wholesaler at market the next spring. Alas, I did not get my order in fast enough that year, and the wholesaler sold out of them before my order was filled.

This is the third year I have these for the French Country Christmas Event, and they sell quickly.

French Country Christmas Event 2019 has a wood mirror with a gold scroll top
I love mirrors! This mirror is wood with a gold painted fleur de lis scroll top and gold accented trim around the mirror. Can't you see it above a half-bath sink?

The print hiding behind the gold metal olive wreath is an antique  (dated 1846) from a Paris brocante on Rue Cler. The print is of a French building in soft water colors. An authentic touch of antique French decor lends elegance to a French-inspired style.

French Country Christmas Event 2019 has an arrangement glass vase with a gold etched design
Do you love fresh flowers, but need a little help arranging them? This beautiful gold etched glass vase has a special top with holes to insert flowers to keep them where you placed them.

French Country Christmas Event 2019 has a French country style white cabinet with red Christmas decor on its wood top
A French Country style white cabinet with a natural wood top is part of the collection of French-inspired items for sale. Traditional red Christmas decor atop the chest includes a fun plaid reindeer.

Isn't he adorable with his fur collar?

French Country Christmas Event 2019 has a red bell-shaped LED light that uses batteries to power a flickering light through a silver etched tree design
A bell-shaped glass LED light uses batteries to power a flickering flame that shines through the silvery tree and greenery. If only it came in dark blue....

French Country Christmas Event 2019 has reproduction glass bottles with gold colored French script at a fraction of the cost of a real antique from a French flea market
Reproduction glass bottles with gold colored French script cost a fraction of a real antique from a French flea market, and are just as beautiful.

A gold fabric heart ornament with red mohair from a Paris ribbon and yarn shop is one of a handful of handcrafted Christmas ornaments. Each one has a small gold-colored embellishment along with mohair or silk fibers.

Ornaments are for more than big Christmas trees. Special one-of-a-kind ornaments can be showcased on small table top trees, glass bottles, or on wall hooks.

Or with larger decor items.

Behind the heart you can catch a glimpse of the 1846 print.

French Country Christmas Event 2019 has wire bird cages with flat backs and bottoms to allow them to hang or to sit
In the French corner of the garden shed are two wire bird cages with flat backs and bottoms allowing the cages to hang on the wall or sit on a shelf. You can also see a French style wood paneled double wall sconce in this photo.

One of my favorite artificial trees this year is the small spruce decorated with pine cones, beads, and pearls. Perfectly sized to fit on a mantel, table, or kitchen island, the little tree makes a great centerpiece.

The distressed white scroll wood lamp has gold accents outlining the shape of the scroll and has a black metal rectangular shade.

Believe it or not, the garden shed has so much more than what is packed into this article. However, you have a good idea of the style of what's available.

  6. Judith, thank you so much for hosting your French Country Christmas/Holiday Event! I had the best time visiting with you and seeing your home, gardens and shed and greenhouse. Very pretty!

I have written two posts about your home and I let others know about your sale through IG and FB. I hope it helped! I think my favorite thing I found was the little white creamware Christmas tree cookie/candy jar, although I did like the wire birdcage. So hard to just pick a few... And I did like your French prints.
