Spring Blue and White Basket Arrangement

Monday, March 29, 2021

A blue and white arrangement for spring sits in a basket on the French Country antique breakfast table. After winter storms in February, the blue skies and bright green emerging leaves on the trees outside the windows are welcome sights. And, another welcome sight is the bright sunshine streaming through the sunspace windows onto the beautiful spring basket arrangement inside.

Is it spring without sky blue lobelia flowers? Not at my house.

Blue lobelia bedding plants are part of every spring for me and after starring in arrangements inside and on my potting bench outside, they are planted in containers on the porch to enjoy all summer.

This spring, the cheerful blue flowers star in a spring basket that includes more small plants, white ceramic bunnies, and blue bird's eggs.

Holidays are perfect times for including seasonal items in a table arrangement
Who doesn't enjoy seeing beautiful table arrangements?

Holidays are perfect times for pulling out seasonal items to include in table arrangements. A little whimsy makes us smile even more. . . This spring I included three white ceramic bunnies to the arrangement on the breakfast table.

Why create a table arrangement inside a basket?

A basket helps protect the surface of wood tables. My breakfast table is an antique French Country table found at a local antique dealer over thirty years ago. The parquet wood top does not have a waterproof finish like modern wood tables finished with polyurethane. Periodically I treat the wood with a natural mineral oil designed for cutting boards which helps protect the wood. A basket adds another layer of protection.

Corralling an arrangement on a table into a basket also makes it easy to move the arrangement when meals are served on the table.

Three white bunnies are adorable as part of a Spring Blue and White Basket Arrangement
? Is there anything more adorable as part of a spring basket than a bunny? How about THREE bunnies?

Each with its own personality.

A marble bunny silhouette crouches next to potted white muscari bulbs as though he could nibble their leaves like his cousin, Peter Rabbit.

In the distance is a small bunny handle on the lid of a white container shaped like an Easter egg.

Keeping watch over the whole garden is a bust of a French hare with his long ears listening for sounds of danger.

White grape hyacinths are part of a Spring Blue and White Basket Arrangement
Do you grow grape hyacinths, also known as muscari?

I have several small patches of different shades of blue grape hyacinths scattered in the yard, but no white ones. When this beautiful bloom in the spring basket fades, I will plant the bulbs in the yard with hopes of them spreading.

A small rosemary plant adds fragrance to a Spring Blue and White Basket Arrangement sitting on an antique French Country table
Do you know rosemary has baby blue blooms?

Two large clusters of rosemary plants about two feet tall began blooming in the yard in January before the devastating winter snowstorm hit in February. It looks like all of my outdoor rosemary plants died during the prolonged sub-freezing weather.

The rosemary plant in the spring basket is one of several small rosemary bedding plants bought to replace the dead rosemary plants in the yard. But, for now we are enjoying the wonderful fragrance of this rosemary plant in the kitchen.

Three bunnies and three plants are part of a Spring Blue and White Basket Arrangement
Why are there three plants and three bunnies in the arrangement?

Regular readers can probably answer this without thinking. For some reason an odd number of items is more pleasing to the eye than an even number.

But, the total number of plants and bunnies is six, an even number.

What did I include in the spring blue and white basket arrangement to make the total number of items an odd number?

A small footed vase holding blue speckled bird's eggs makes the number of items an odd number.

  1. Your basket is absolutely gorgeous Judith! I love the bunnies and the flowers will cheer up anyone... even me watching the snow come down yet again as I read this! But 70's are in the forecast for later this week so for the moment, I'll just enjoy your beautiful basket. Have a wonderful week!
