E is for Evergreens

Thursday, November 9, 2023

Can it be Christmas without decorations? Without fresh greenery? E is for Evergreens is the fifth post in Christmas traditions from A to Z that add sparkle, love, laughter, beauty, comfort, nostalgia, meaning, and joy to the Christmas season.

Perhaps evergreen decorations are a tradition for you. Or, maybe you will be inspired to add evergreens to your home as a new tradition for you!

is for Evergreens.

Decking the halls with mistletoe, holly, and ivy has been a tradition in England since the late medieval period. Europeans decorated their homes in winter with holly and ivy long before homes were decorated for Christmas. Cut greenery freshened the air in winter homes and brightened people's spirits by reminding them Spring was coming.

Decorating with fresh greenery for the Christmas holidays in the United States has its origins in the English traditions. Even today historic Williamsburg, Virginia has lavish fresh greenery wreaths, swags, and garlands for exterior doors, windows, gates, and fences for the Christmas holidays.

French Country Christmas Garden Shed Exterior

Sunday, December 13, 2020

Dressing the French Country garden shed inside for Christmas is a tradition, and this year the exterior is all dressed for Christmas also. What started as a plywood garden shed years ago evolved over time into a stone-clad garden house that deserves beautiful Christmas greenery.

The Best Christmas Greenery Idea | Tree Slice As A Wreath

Wednesday, December 9, 2020

The best Christmas greenery idea I have had in decades occurred to me when I thought of cutting a fresh Christmas wreath from a small evergreen tree. A slice from the middle section of a fresh Fraiser fir tree makes an excellent wreath already arranged in a circle.

Best Christmas Greenery Idea is a slice from the tree as a wreath
You can use a tree slice as a wreath on a door or window, but another way to use a wreath is as a base for a greenery arrangement in a beautiful ceramic container. Instead of using the greenery vertically, the tree slice fills a large footed ceramic urn.

Peach Trellis Christmas Greenery

Wednesday, December 2, 2020

Peach colored trellises in the style of French Country tuteurs are decorated with Christmas greenery for the holiday season. Fresh boxwood wreaths hung with sheer lavender ribbons sprinkled with silvery glitter dots are festive Christmas outdoor decorations in an unexpected color.

The lavender ribbon color complements the peach colored trellises and adds just the right amount of sparkle to say Christmas instead of Spring or Summer.

Christmas Red Plaid Berry Birdcage

Tuesday, December 10, 2019

Dress up a wire mesh birdcage for Christmas with faux red berries, fresh tree clippings, preserved moss, tiny pine cones, and a cheery red plaid ribbon. Later this week read about a coordinating berry red cardinal and rustic grapevine and berry wreath on placemats and napkins for a Christmas table setting.

A marvelous thing about this wonderful time of the year is almost everything can be dressed up for Christmas, including a wire mesh birdcage.

Tips for Best Ever Christmas Wreath

Tuesday, December 3, 2019

Tips for the best ever Christmas wreath for your front door start with a store-bought fresh wreath. And, if you live near a Trader Joe's, you can buy a reasonably-priced fresh wreath with pine cones and fresh juniper berries. With a handful of tips you can take the already gorgeous wreath to a special one.

There is something special about a Christmas wreath on a front door. Seeing a wreath when passing by or when visiting a home makes me smile and feel the joy of the Christmas season. For those of us who grew up reading Southern Living magazine, a Christmas wreath made using fresh greenery says Southern hospitality at its finest.

Thank you, Amber of Follow the Yellow Brick Home, for gathering twenty of us together to share the beauty of Christmas Door Decor. I love giving my readers beautiful inspiration for adding special holiday decor to their front doors. Links to all the ideas are at the end of the article.

Winter French Country Living Room

Sunday, January 27, 2019

Winter decor in my French Country inspired living room includes an oval boxwood, an oval glass cloche, and a favorite old water bottle.

Live green plants are always among my favorite things in the house... in every room, but live rosemary trees are hard for me to keep alive.

Winter Living Room Greenery

Winter months can be bleak, but adding live greenery to your living room can keep the inside of your home from looking cold and dreary.

Christmas Kitchen Plate Stand

Monday, December 24, 2018

A French-style kitchen plate stand holds seasonal greenery along with white dishes during the Christmas season and into the coming Winter months.

One of the easiest ways to add Christmas cheer to a kitchen is to add plants and flowers associated with the season. Paperwhites forced into bloom, rosemary trained as a tree, ivy grown in a wreath shape, and small evergreen trees spruce up white dishes for the holidays.

Christmas Rosemary Trees on Kitchen Island

Wednesday, December 20, 2017

Fresh greenery always makes me think of Christmas, and nothing smells more like Christmas than a live rosemary tree. Three of them on the kitchen island triples the fragrance of Christmas, the feeling of Christmas, and the look of French Country noël.

Hanging Horizontal Wreath

Step-by-Step Directions

Updated: December 4, 2024

Christmas is the time for "hanging the greens," mistletoe, holly, ivy, evergreens. Traditionally businesses, homes, and churches now hang greens the first day of Advent, but the tradition has deeper roots in ancient Druid, Celt, Norse, and Roman cultures that celebrated the winter solstice which occurs around December 21.

If you love hanging greens in your home as part of your family's traditions and would like to hang a horizontal evergreen wreath, it is much easier than you may think. Since this post first appeared, horhzontal wreath hangers are now available to buy. Hanging a horizontal wreath became as easy as 1, 2, 3!  1) Attach a ceiling hook where you want to hang your wreath. 2) Place wreath on a horizontal wreath hanger. 3) Hang wreath from hook.
If you do not have a horizontal wreath hanger, here is a DIY step-by-step guide for how to hang a horizontal boxwood wreath.

Christmas Exterior Decorations Viewed From Inside

Tuesday, November 28, 2017

Christmas wreaths on iron driveway gates, front doors, and windows are beautiful to see as you drive by or attend a party at a friend's house during the holidays. I love seeing fresh garlands, Willamsburg-style fruit decorations, and lighted trees in yards. It IS a wonderful time of the year when houses are decorated on the outside.

All of those beautiful exterior decorations are visible to people looking at houses from outside the house. What about looking FROM INSIDE the house? Can you see your exterior Christmas decorations when you are inside looking out? Chances are you cannot.

This year, create some exterior Christmas decorations visible to everyone inside your house as they look out glass doors and windows. Every time you pass by the window or door, you can glimpse a little Christmas that will make your heart glad and experience a little French

joie de vivre

Christmas Potting Bench First Look

Tuesday, November 7, 2017

A potting bench full of Christmas greenery makes a porch an inviting place during the holiday season. Friends and family love seeing touches of Christmas all through the house, inside and out. Paperwhites are favorite winter flowers that gardner's dream about for their greenhouses, conservatories, garden sheds, and potting benches.

Winter Greenery After Christmas

Wednesday, January 18, 2017

When the landscape is bare, and plants are dormant for the winter, a little indoor greenery gives color to our homes and gives life to our spirits. Winter greenery after Christmas adds a little joy to everyday living.

Botanical Christmas Decor

Looking for ways to add simple natural holiday decorations? Perhaps to a porch, sunroom, or garden house? Something that blends with your existing plants, but gives a Christmas feel to the space? With the addition of one or two traditional Christmas themes and traditional Christmas greenery, an everyday collection of botanicals becomes a holiday table top.

Winter Sunspace Plant Shelves

Saturday, December 27, 2014

While Christmas Day may be officially over,
Christmas lingers for weeks at my house,
especially this year with all the
natural mostly unadorned greenery
that will transition from
Christmas to Winter
quite easily.

With just a bird, a nest, a little bit of green ribbon,
ivy plants, a fresh boxwood wreath and a fabric snowdrop,
the breakfast sunspace plant shelves
can stay the same for weeks into Winter.

The wreath has a Christmas look,
but without glitz or bright spots of red
that signal Christmas decorations,
it also looks like Winter.
Snowdrops are among the first bulbs
to emerge and to bloom even amidst snows of Winter.

Bright sunlight from the sunspace windows floods this corner of the kitchen.
A live ivy wreath on the top shelf of the white garden shelves
flourishes during Winter as it basks in the bright light.

During the days leading up to Christmas,
a vase filled with cut greenery added to
Christmas decorations.

Fresh cedar and magnolia branches sat on the floor
between the two garden plant shelves,
filling the room with Christmas aromas.

Frasier fir clippings in a rustic basket on the extra seating,
a white French ladderback chair, added to the holiday look.

Nestled in the basket is a bird's nest found in the yard.

One small holly branch is a subtle reminder of Christmas.

Yet, nothing about a bird's nest makes it an
exclusively Christmas decoration.
Winter is the time to find abandoned nests
that are not sheltering hatching eggs.

TIP:  Mist a found bird's nest with alcohol-infused water
to kill small mites that may reside in the nest.
Remember to wash all fresh greenery from your yard
with soapy water, then rinse, before using indoors.

No trees/shrubs in which to look for a bird's nest?
No problem.

Use a handcrafted replica like the one on the boxwood wreath.

Small 4-inch ivy pots add natural greenery on either side of the nest.

The small real ivy wreath on the second shelf reminds us of Christmas,
but the field glasses, purple twine/scissors, and Nest sign
remind of us gardening plans/activities for Winter.

A gray concrete dove with moss and a small ivy plant
sits inside a galvanized crown on the bottom shelf of the plant stand.

Greenery and birds' nests provide just the boost needed
to see us through the cold Winter months.

Greenery & Lights

Friday, January 10, 2014

Nostalgia,
Procrastination,
Reluctance,

are all words that describe
why
greenery & lights

are still up and about at my house
the second week of January.

Christmas is a magical time filled with promises
of love, laughter, joy.
Why does it have to disappear so quickly?
Why can't we have the reminders for a little longer?

I am not ready to see it go.

I still like seeing the welcome to my house...

The soft blur of lights surrounded by fresh greens...

The beautiful little tree with its dark green branches,
perfect shape, and just right single top stem
looks so cheerful leaning against the wall.

The holly tree and the mossy brick steps
aren't ready to see the greenery go either.

Bonjour, my friends,
not au revoir,
just a little while longer let's look at
the blue berries and the little green tree.

Let's enjoy the
little red ribbon holding the single
red ornament
just a few more days.

The
BIG
tree that adorned the living room
is gone from the living room.

Sad to say, it doesn't look like its beautiful self
that sat on the deck waiting to come inside.
No, now it's dry, brittle, and ready
to become mulch.

But,
the bright lights on the outdoor arbor are still cheery.

So, let's keep the front entrance greenery and
the cheery arbor lights a few more days
to remind us of the
love, laughter, and joy
promised by
Christmas.

Christmas Greenery 2013

Friday, November 22, 2013

Over the years
my tastes in Christmas decorations
have changed.
I have begun this year's decorations, and
they harken back to the simpler decorations
of my childhood.

To a time when our Christmas tree
was a cedar tree cut from the fence row
along side an old country road.
No one bought a tree.

During late November, I
would begin sizing up cedar trees along the roads.
I was always looking for the perfect shape
and would point out trees that I thought
would be a great Christmas tree.
Then, about two weeks before Christmas,
my dad would take us four children to the chosen tree,
and he would cut it.

The
Christmas Greenery
in our breakfast sunspace this year is fresh greenery
and reflects back to a style similar to my childhood.
One that is simple, filled with fresh greens.

Last year I was drawn to the photos on blogs that showed
bare real trees placed in rustic containers such as
galvanized buckets and wicker baskets.
Most of these photos were from Nordic countries.

From that inspiration, this year I placed a fresh Fraiser fir table-top tree
from Home Depot into a galvanized bucket I found
at Chipper's antique/thrift store in Alabama.

This is not the first time we have had a fresh bare tree.
No, I was ahead of the trend about fifteen years ago
when we had a large fresh Fraiser fir tree
on our open back deck.
We could see it from both the living room and
the breakfast sunspace.
Passersby could see it from the road as they drove by.
At night we left the outside lights on until we went to bed
so the tree was visible after dark.

That was the year I just could not get everything done
by Christmas.
So, the big beautiful tree sat on the deck without
a single light or decoration.
I really liked it.

Since then, I've had small bare trees outside more than once.
Sometimes on the front porch.

Sometimes on the open back deck.

In 2012, it snowed on Christmas Day in north Texas.
The first snowfall on Christmas Day in decades.
A magical day.

Then, in January 2013, we had snow again.

Our large tree that had been decorated in the living room
was sitting on the deck awaiting disposal
when the snowstorm hit. Snow covered the tree, and
we had another magical moment that winter.

For Christmas 2013, the breakfast sunspace has
the bare, fresh Fraiser fir, three olive tree topiaries,
a couple of ivy topiaries, and a cluster of paperwhites
in a holly decorated bowl.

The paperwhite narcissi are sitting atop two red books.
The New Testament English Version for the Deaf
belonged to my dad.
I gave it to him for Christmas one year.
After he passed away, my mom gave it back to me.
Inside is the card I enclosed to Daddy.

Daddy was not deaf.
This New Testament is a translation by a
Bible Translation Center that I have supported
in a variety of ways for almost forty years.
So, this New Testament is special for
several reasons.

The old blue chippy high chair with its woven rush seat
was used by different children family members and
children of our dearest close friends over the years.
Lots of memories of little ones who sat in that chair.

Yes, I like this year's simple fresh greenery
in the breakfast sunspace.

Simple fresh greenery
complement the old white wicker planter,
the locker wire basket, the galvanized bucket,
the red books, the well-loved high chair,
and my memories of childhood Christmases.
