French Country Thanksgiving Table Setting

Tuesday, November 13, 2018

A French Country Thanksgiving table setting sets the stage for a traditional French Country recipe, Coq Au Vin, for you to cook  for your family during the Thanksgiving holidays.

Welcome to my French-inspired home for ideas for your family to Gather 'Round The Table this Thanksgiving holiday. In this season of thankfulness, I am grateful for Amber at Follow The Yellow Brick Home for hosting a Gather 'Round The Table Blog Hop for 20 of our blogging friends to share ideas for Thanksgiving with all our readers as you prepare for your family's celebration of the holiday.

If you are coming from Rosemary-Thyme, I so glad you are here. Be sure to see the links to all of the other Gather 'Round The Table ideas for Thanksgiving at the end of the post.

Coq Au Vin is a traditional French recipe made using chicken thighs and legs for a new recipe for your family Thanksgiving meal. But, if your family insists on a traditional Thanksgiving meal, you can adapt the Coq Au Vin recipe to use any poultry leftovers for the day after Thanksgiving.

No dried out leftover turkey sandwiches. Instead the recipe makes a moist sauce great for sopping up with freshly-baked rolls. Serve with a fresh salad, and you have a delicious day-after Thanksgiving meal.

Thanksgiving Gold and White Table

Sunday, November 22, 2015

Pilgrims are credited with observing the first Thanksgiving in the United States as a way to celebrate their first harvest in the New World, a celebration of giving thanks for prosperity.  Just as the first Thanksgiving was celebrated with an abundance of food, most Americans today observe Thanksgiving with tables filled with roasted turkeys, vegetables, and an assortment of pies and cakes. A table filled with fruits of our prosperity.

Thanksgiving gold and white table reminds us of the abundance in our lives

A Thanksgiving tablescape that echoes prosperity is one filled with gold and white settings and decorations. This table is set with reminders of the abundance in our lives on a holiday set aside to give thanks and praise for this year's harvest.

Thanksgiving gold and white table has a cinderella pumpkin with gold and white wreath base

Gold and white place settings surround the gold and white adorned Cinderella pumpkin that is a Fall fruit symbolic of harvest time. Part of the beauty of this table setting is how little it cost to create because we live in a country with stores filled with goods at reasonable prices that are within most budgets.  Using existing items also helped keep the cost low.

The small French table for four barely has room to hold food for regular meals and is not large enough to hold a turkey dinner with all the traditional side dishes.  The kitchen island is large, and the Thanksgiving meal can be served buffet-style from it leaving room on the table for a large centerpiece.

By repurposing the Fall Cinderella pumpkin, there was no need to buy anything new as a centerpiece. With just a little gold and white spray paint and some vines, the pumpkin was transformed.

One of my favorite dishes to use for centerpieces, and best bargains ever, is the white footed stoneware cake plate that came from the local Goodwill Store.  The joy from using it for the past two to three years has been worth much more the $7 it cost.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with brass candleholder

The brass candleholder was a Christmas present from one of my brothers many years ago.  Brass is becoming popular again. Whenever de-cluttering, always keep in mind the quality and sentimentality of items. Quality is always in style, and you can always find ways to use quality items.

Reusing beautiful things is a good way to keep decorating budgets in control.  The multi-colored beaded candle ring is a Christmas package decoration from several years ago that has Fall colors. Over the years, the little decoration had been attached to many presents before circling the brass candleholder.

The glass octagonal bucket's golden handle is decorated with a second beaded Christmas decoration.  Repeating decorations in a table setting helps unify the table and keeps the overall design coherent, not disjointed.

The glass bucket is an antique mall find and cost very little.  While its original purpose may have been for ice, whole cranberry sauce would be beautiful served in it.  Use the gold-beaded gravy ladle to serve the cranberry sauce, or use the ladle to serve giblet gravy from the glass bucket.

Brand-name outlet stores are another way to set a beautiful table for a fraction of the cost of retail prices.  The crystal glasses were 80% off at the Memphis, TN Williams and Sonoma outlet store. These are light weight, and fit small-size hands very well.  Weight and size are factors for older family members at the Thanksgiving table.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with inexpensive grapevine wreath napkin rings

Grapevine wreath napkin rings repeat the grapevine wreath decoration at the base of the centerpiece pumpkin.  Hobby Lobby sells packages of six small grapevine wreaths for $2.99, but also offers them for 40%-50% off during their Christmas decoration sales.  At 50% off, each wreath costs just 33¢.

Use some of the gold metallic spray paint used for the vines around the pumpkin on small pinecones collected on nature walks during the year.  These pinecones were collected from the ground at a Texas highway rest stop last year. The gold pinecones dress up the grapevine napkin rings, and their price, FREE, cannot be beaten.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with DIY french script stamped white feathers

Add a little whimsy for fun.  Feathers stamped with gold French script repeat the gold and white color scheme.

An unusual touch, the feathers are easy to make.  Use white feathers, and stamp them with a French script stamp using gold stamping ink.  Once again, watch for 50% off rubber stamps and ink at Hobby Lobby.  For best effect, display them in clear glass containers like this small vase or in a small used jam jar.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with gift card place cards

A small gold-colored place card holder with a wreath design adds another touch of France to the table. The paper card with the wild bird's nest repeats the feather look in the gold script feathers and the wild tendrils of the vines around the pumpkin.  Beautiful paper cards are an inexpensive way to add seasonal touches to a table setting.

Pier I offers the scalloped edged white dishes with plates priced at $6.  These were bought on sale for 20% off a couple of years ago.  Notice the repeated design of scallops in the plates, placemats, and cake plate holding the pumpkin.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with inexpensive gold plate chargers

Gold beads in the flatware coordinate with the inexpensive gold round chargers found at Walmart for $1.48 each this month.

Sometimes, a special gold and white cloche captures your heart so much you spend full price.  These little white cloches with the gold birds were so unusual that I could not pass them by.

And, the little bird has captured me as a selfie taking his photo with my little bleu point-and-shoot Olympic camera.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting is a reminder of the abundance in our lives

This year's harvest at my house was not in fruits, vegetables, and wild game, but in my income that allowed me to gather a gold and white Thanksgiving table.  The abundance in the United States is a blessing for the vast majority of Americans.

According to Pew Research, "...almost nine-in-ten Americans had a standard of living that was above the global middle-income standard.  Only 7% of people in the U.S. were middle income, 3% were low income and 2% were poor."  Source: http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2015/07/09/how-americans-compare-with-the-global-middle-class/

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all the prosperity and blessings in our lives.  Another blessing is the luxury of being able to spend time creating beautiful table settings instead of spending all my time working to survive.

Finally, another blessing is my readers.  Thank you for stopping by to spend time with me.  May your Thanksgiving be filled with the love of family and friends.

Gold and White Pumpkin and France

Sunday, November 15, 2015

There are no words to take away the pain, confusion, and loss for our French friends who suffered devastating losses this week in Paris.  Yet, beauty and compassion help ease the pain and remind us that the vast majority of people in the world seek beauty and compassion, not mayhem and destruction.  As we continue to write our blog posts, we are voices for beauty and compassion during this time of an incomprehensible violent act.  As an American, I send condolences to France and say Americans all across the United States are standing with France.

Sharon Santoni, author of My French Country Home, has written a moving post, making sense of it all,  in response to the violent acts in Paris.

Vive la France!

Ever mindful that to do nothing is to grant victory to those whose actions oppose us,
I am posting my regular blog post about beauty as a way to say
we will go on, and we will not be defeated.

Add a little glimmer to your Thanksgiving table with a pumpkin
resting atop gold and white wild wreaths.

Start with a Cinderella-type pumpkin,
or transform your Fall pumpkin into the centerpiece of your Thanksgiving meal.

Spray a grapevine wreath with a coat of metallic gold paint.

After the gold paint dries,
overspray the gold wreath with a light misting of white spray paint,
and leave some of the metallic gold spots.
To get light coverage, hold the spray can 1'-2' from the wreath
and continually move the spray can back and forth.

Use the same metallic gold spray to paint thin, wild vines with complete coverage.
Wild honeysuckle vines are thin
and often have interesting squiggles and braided vines.

Place the grapevine wreath on a base such as a footed cake plate.
A basket is another option as a base.
Place the pumpkin atop the grapevine wreath.
Then twist the gold painted thin vines around the pumpkin.

If possible, use thin vines that still have some attached leaves,
and paint the leaves gold, also.

If there are no attached leaves to paint gold,
just paint loose leaves gold to add to the arrangement.

Adjust the thin gold vines so that some are interspersed around the grapevine wreath,
and some of the vines are lifted above the grapevine wreath and over the pumpkin.

Voilà, a gold and white Thanksgiving centerpiece.

Thanksgiving is just days away, and then we will be decorating for Christmas.

5 Thanksgiving Blessings Found in White Pumpkins and Blue Berries

Sunday, November 23, 2014

We can see five Thanksgiving blessings found in a white pumpkin nestled
in a blue-berried grapevine wreath.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner.
A time when our thoughts focus on family and friends
and the blessings in our lives...

When we slow down and think about our lives, we realize we can SEE
the blessings in our lives in whatever is around us.

F R E E D O M

White pumpkins and blue berries...

Represent the freedom to choose how to live our lives.
We live in a country in which we can choose a white pumpkin
instead of being required only to have an orange pumpkin.
Traditional fall colors are golds, oranges, browns, and reds,
but our freedom allows us to celebrate fall with white and blue
without fear for choosing to be different from the majority.

A B U N D A N C E

White pumpkins and blue berries...

Represent the abundance of material riches in our lives.
We have an abundance of fruits and vegetables that demonstrates our
farmers can grow more than the bare necessities of life.
Yes, our country has an abundance of crops for which to give thanks,
just as our forefathers gave thanks for their harvests.

The white pumpkin could be eaten, but will not be.
No, it is merely used to feed my soul with its beauty.
We have such abundance in our lives that we can use vegetables as art.
The pumpkin represents the personal abundance I enjoyed this year.
I was blessed with enough riches to spend money on nonessentials.

L U X U R Y  O F   T I M E

White pumpkins and blue berries...

Represent the luxury of time in my life.
For most of my adult life I worked in demanding full-time jobs
that required most of my waking hours, leaving me exhausted
and with little time for leisure activities.

Now I can spend time finding just the right white pumpkin
with a perfect quirky stem with multiple squiggles
to place on a grapevine wreath.
What fun positioning the blue berry vine
just so atop the grapevine wreath.
Then a few days later, more fun in adding
brown and yellow feathers around the pumpkin.
Life is so good to have the luxury of time.

L O V E   O F   F R I E N D S   &   F A M I L Y

White pumpkins and blue berries...

Represent the love of friends and family for whom the
fall arrangement was created.
We will share Thanksgiving together.
There will be five to seven of us.
Not as many as when I was growing up,
but without them, life would not be as full or meaningful.
My dear sister and her husband will help prepare
the meal and house for others joining us.
One couple has shared Thanksgiving and Christmas
with me for the past five years.
Sometimes at my house, sometimes at their house.
We've invited the good neighbor across the street
who lives alone and watches after us.
We've also invited a former colleague/boss whose
whose husband will be working all day shuttling
travelers to and fro from the airport to a hotel.

W A R M   H O U S E

White pumpkins and blue berries...

Represent a warm house in which to live.
A place, a home, where fall arrangements can be made.

How grateful I am to have a warm house.
As a child in Alabama, I sometimes lived in
houses heated only by a wood-burning stove.
Which meant one side of you roasted while the other side was chilled.
You had to keep turning.
At night, you could hardly move from the weight of the quilts,
all handmade by family members.
Mornings, you shivered with chattering teeth
until you got your clothes on.
As an adult, I have also visited houses in the northeast
in the winter that were so cold.
Brrrr.....

Central heat and enough money to pay the electric bill
are true blessings!

 White pumpkins and blue berries...

Represent five Thanksgiving blessings
and many more.

May your Thanksgiving be filled with
freedom, abundance, luxury of time, love of friends and family,
and in a safe, warm home.
