Christmas Potting Bench First Look

A potting bench full of Christmas greenery makes a porch an inviting place during the holiday season. Friends and family love seeing touches of Christmas all through the house, inside and out. Paperwhites are favorite winter flowers that gardner's dream about for their greenhouses, conservatories, garden sheds, and potting benches. 


First Look at a Christmas Potting Bench

To make gardening Christmas dreams come true, plant narcissus during the first week of November to force the bulbs into bloom during December. Their beautiful white blossoms contrast elegantly against deep green fir branches, ivy topiaries, rosemary trees, and boxwood wreaths.

Plant two or three paperwhite bulbs in pea gravel in a small glass vase or a cereal-size bowl to give as a gift for the hostess of a Christmas party. She will enjoy their blooms for the rest of the holidays.

Mix vintage glass electrical insulators and canning jars with your own glass vases potted with paperwhites for a festive Christmas potting bench. Rustic copper pipes and metal tools add to the vintage look.

Look closely at the large vase to see a bulb nestled in the pea gravel. By using glass containers it is easy to see where the water level should come.... just to the bottom of the bulbs.

A metal basket hanging from a galvanized metal grid offers another place for more white-flowering bulbs. Vintage French zinc seed pots are the perfect size for single faux hyacinth bulbs. 




Adding fresh preserved moss to the galvanized star topiary is next on the Christmas potting bench to-do list. A post about how to refresh a tired moss topiary is in the works.

What more is yet to come for the Christmas potting bench decorations? A fresh cedar garland along the  top hooks, fresh noble fir branches in the hanging basket, a large galvanized bucket with Christmas greenery, and possibly a French Christmas greeting as a banner or a wooden sign...
