Master Bath Small Vanity Progress

Thursday, April 19, 2018

When you last saw the master bathroom's small vanity area, the vanity was its original lightly stained wood finish, turned reddish, from thirty years ago. Finally, this spring work began to update the old vanity area from its American Country look.

Here we are, 5 weeks after work began.

The first of several planned changes this spring include painting the vanity white, but the number of times the vanity would be painted and the number of colors of white were not listed in the published plan I recently shared.

Spring Narcissus Pillow

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
Percy Bysshe Shelley

diy spring narcissus pillow

Dark days of cold dreary winter continue here, accompanied by steady rain. As I stared at the rain spots on the window, I was glad the trees, shrubs, and BULBS were getting the water they need. There are already buds on the Erlicheer narcissus in the front under the oak trees and on the Thalia narcissus on the sloped hillside in the backyard.

I thought of spring and remembered a pillow I saw online. The pillow was perfect for bringing spring inside now before its official arrival on March 20. Rather than buy that one online, I decided to create a similar do-it-yourself version.

This is an EASY project that requires no sewing!

White Snapdragons Inside a White Metal Urn

Tuesday, April 25, 2017

My sister saw some white ceramic planters at Home Goods and after thinking about them all night, decided, "Yes, I have to have them." That is how our next day began that ended with white snapdragons inside a white metal urn.

Christmas Kitchen In Blue and White

Sunday, December 25, 2016

Christmas Day finds most kitchens filled with good food, laughter, and love. Our beef in the slow cooker (thank you, Yvonne of StoneGable, for the recipe) is ready, potatoes are boiling to make mashed potatoes, and fresh green beans are waiting for final preparation.

How To Style a Rustic Blue Box

Tuesday, October 25, 2016

You may have a natural talent for knowing exactly how to style a large box with flowers, pine cones, pumpkins, and wild wispy vines. Or, you may have taken floral courses or weekend workshops to develop your talent.

I confess I did not have a natural talent and did not take a course to develop a talent for styling a rustic blue box. No, I developed my skills by reading gracious fellow bloggers who shared their tips and secrets for styling arrangements on their blogs, and some even have shown step-by-step instructions. Plus, I have a very talented sister who is a professional florist who gives me pointers periodically. She did take floral courses to become a florist.

Thanksgiving Gold and White Table

Sunday, November 22, 2015

Pilgrims are credited with observing the first Thanksgiving in the United States as a way to celebrate their first harvest in the New World, a celebration of giving thanks for prosperity.  Just as the first Thanksgiving was celebrated with an abundance of food, most Americans today observe Thanksgiving with tables filled with roasted turkeys, vegetables, and an assortment of pies and cakes. A table filled with fruits of our prosperity.

Thanksgiving gold and white table reminds us of the abundance in our lives

A Thanksgiving tablescape that echoes prosperity is one filled with gold and white settings and decorations. This table is set with reminders of the abundance in our lives on a holiday set aside to give thanks and praise for this year's harvest.

Thanksgiving gold and white table has a cinderella pumpkin with gold and white wreath base

Gold and white place settings surround the gold and white adorned Cinderella pumpkin that is a Fall fruit symbolic of harvest time. Part of the beauty of this table setting is how little it cost to create because we live in a country with stores filled with goods at reasonable prices that are within most budgets.  Using existing items also helped keep the cost low.

The small French table for four barely has room to hold food for regular meals and is not large enough to hold a turkey dinner with all the traditional side dishes.  The kitchen island is large, and the Thanksgiving meal can be served buffet-style from it leaving room on the table for a large centerpiece.

By repurposing the Fall Cinderella pumpkin, there was no need to buy anything new as a centerpiece. With just a little gold and white spray paint and some vines, the pumpkin was transformed.

One of my favorite dishes to use for centerpieces, and best bargains ever, is the white footed stoneware cake plate that came from the local Goodwill Store.  The joy from using it for the past two to three years has been worth much more the $7 it cost.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with brass candleholder

The brass candleholder was a Christmas present from one of my brothers many years ago.  Brass is becoming popular again. Whenever de-cluttering, always keep in mind the quality and sentimentality of items. Quality is always in style, and you can always find ways to use quality items.

Reusing beautiful things is a good way to keep decorating budgets in control.  The multi-colored beaded candle ring is a Christmas package decoration from several years ago that has Fall colors. Over the years, the little decoration had been attached to many presents before circling the brass candleholder.

The glass octagonal bucket's golden handle is decorated with a second beaded Christmas decoration.  Repeating decorations in a table setting helps unify the table and keeps the overall design coherent, not disjointed.

The glass bucket is an antique mall find and cost very little.  While its original purpose may have been for ice, whole cranberry sauce would be beautiful served in it.  Use the gold-beaded gravy ladle to serve the cranberry sauce, or use the ladle to serve giblet gravy from the glass bucket.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with sale crystal glasses

Brand-name outlet stores are another way to set a beautiful table for a fraction of the cost of retail prices.  The crystal glasses were 80% off at the Memphis, TN Williams and Sonoma outlet store. These are light weight, and fit small-size hands very well.  Weight and size are factors for older family members at the Thanksgiving table.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with inexpensive grapevine wreath napkin rings

Grapevine wreath napkin rings repeat the grapevine wreath decoration at the base of the centerpiece pumpkin.  Hobby Lobby sells packages of six small grapevine wreaths for $2.99, but also offers them for 40%-50% off during their Christmas decoration sales.  At 50% off, each wreath costs just 33¢.

Use some of the gold metallic spray paint used for the vines around the pumpkin on small pinecones collected on nature walks during the year.  These pinecones were collected from the ground at a Texas highway rest stop last year. The gold pinecones dress up the grapevine napkin rings, and their price, FREE, cannot be beaten.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with DIY french script stamped white feathers

Add a little whimsy for fun.  Feathers stamped with gold French script repeat the gold and white color scheme.

An unusual touch, the feathers are easy to make.  Use white feathers, and stamp them with a French script stamp using gold stamping ink.  Once again, watch for 50% off rubber stamps and ink at Hobby Lobby.  For best effect, display them in clear glass containers like this small vase or in a small used jam jar.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with gift card place cards

A small gold-colored place card holder with a wreath design adds another touch of France to the table. The paper card with the wild bird's nest repeats the feather look in the gold script feathers and the wild tendrils of the vines around the pumpkin.  Beautiful paper cards are an inexpensive way to add seasonal touches to a table setting.

Pier I offers the scalloped edged white dishes with plates priced at $6.  These were bought on sale for 20% off a couple of years ago.  Notice the repeated design of scallops in the plates, placemats, and cake plate holding the pumpkin.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting with inexpensive gold plate chargers

Gold beads in the flatware coordinate with the inexpensive gold round chargers found at Walmart for $1.48 each this month.

Sometimes, a special gold and white cloche captures your heart so much you spend full price.  These little white cloches with the gold birds were so unusual that I could not pass them by.

And, the little bird has captured me as a selfie taking his photo with my little bleu point-and-shoot Olympic camera.

Thanksgiving gold and white table setting is a reminder of the abundance in our lives

This year's harvest at my house was not in fruits, vegetables, and wild game, but in my income that allowed me to gather a gold and white Thanksgiving table.  The abundance in the United States is a blessing for the vast majority of Americans.

According to Pew Research, "...almost nine-in-ten Americans had a standard of living that was above the global middle-income standard.  Only 7% of people in the U.S. were middle income, 3% were low income and 2% were poor."  Source: http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2015/07/09/how-americans-compare-with-the-global-middle-class/

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all the prosperity and blessings in our lives.  Another blessing is the luxury of being able to spend time creating beautiful table settings instead of spending all my time working to survive.

Finally, another blessing is my readers.  Thank you for stopping by to spend time with me.  May your Thanksgiving be filled with the love of family and friends.

Even More White In The Kitchen

Wednesday, November 11, 2015

Real-life kitchens, at least at my house, are rarely clutter free.  Dishes stack up around and in the sink, the trash can fills up, flowers droop and drop their petals, cracker boxes lie opened on the counter, sticky spots magically appear on the counter tops, and clean dishes sit haphazardly on the drainer.

Yet, clutter free with lots of white is still a goal.  Pinterest and blogs have so many beautiful examples of fresh-looking white kitchens that it is easy to find examples.  One of my all-time favorite white real kitchens belongs to Jennifer @ Town and Country.  Her country kitchen looks beautiful for every time of the year, but especially beautiful when decorated for Christmas.

There are times when the kitchen is clean and clutter free.  That's when I can see what changes to consider.  Somehow the empty spaces make it easier to envision something different.

Moving the blue wooden counter stools from the island let me see the space with a clear perspective. French-style stools with padded oval backs, padded linen seats, and white-washed wood legs and frames would look great.

The antique English pine stool goes so well with the pine ceilings that the question is whether to replace it with a French-style stool.  A reason for replacing the pine stool is to unify the stools around the island.  Also, multiple stool styles could add to a cluttered look.

Another way to de-clutter the kitchen was to eliminate some of the items on the pine shelf behind the sink.  White scalloped-edge dishes also help create an even more white kitchen.

Another change to the kitchen shelf is the style of the plant container.  Previously, there was a blue ceramic pot, but the white metal urn is more narrow which gives the space an airer look.

More white.  Simple white hydrangeas on the breakfast table.

And they can be moved anywhere.

Whatever changes are made, there are no plans to change the blue wool rug.

Can you believe that in less than three weeks we will be celebrating Thanksgiving, and
then it will be time to begin decorating for Christmas?

Wish for a White Flower

Wednesday, June 10, 2015

Sometimes I think I may have a fairy godmother,
or perhaps, a tender-hearted angel, who watches over me
and hears my heart's wishes.

With all the unusual amounts of rain in May,
the roadsides are still green into June and, for us in Texas,
even could be called lush with blooms.
For the first time, I noticed a large wild shrub
with graceful fronds loaded with white flowers
all along the roadsides and near wooded areas.

Evolving Easter Vignette - When Is It Finished?

Friday, April 3, 2015

When creating a table top vignette,
where do you begin, and where do you stop?
When is the vignette the final version?
Finishing a centerpiece is often the hardest part.

What recently began in my mind as a white vignette
turned into a purple one as seen in The Color of Easter
Yet, I still had a white centerpiece forming in my mind
because white has been enticing me, calling to me as a siren.

However, blue, beloved bleu, continues also to call to me.
Since I've been collecting blue for many years,
many beautiful blue things have found a home with me.

B L U E
symbolizes
trust,
loyalty,
and
confidence.

When I survey my mind trying to recognize
what are the things I value, hold dear, and seek,
trust and loyalty are at the top of the list.
My deepest sorrows have been caused by people
who broke their trust with me
and who were not loyal.

Yes, I love bleu for how beautiful it looks to me,
but I also love bleu for its symbolism.

So, as I rearranged the kitchen counter,
a blue and white grouping took the place of the purple setting on the island.
Not a hard thing to do, just move pretty blue things together like...
the kitchen towel with the blue bunnies,
a clear vase with blue speckled eggs,
and a tiny little frosty blue bunny.

The dear little bunny came from Goodwill
and sits someplace visible all year,
moving from spot to spot.

As much as I enjoyed the blue and white,
an all-white grouping kept nagging at me.
The only way to quiet a nagging is
to do something about the reason for the nagging.

Out came the white pitcher, the white creamer, and
a smiling white iron doorstop bunny holding a basket.

The basket holds flowers, not eggs.

Four-inch bedding plants surrounded by preserved moss
add height and a touch of nature.

A little touch of bleu speckled eggs just had to fill the creamer.
A white cotton hand towel with embroidery rounds out the white grouping.
Five items inside the white wicker basket.

So, is it finished now?

Not exactly.
The redbud branches still have a few days of beauty left in them.

The white vignette will truly become all white
(almost white except blue eggs
when the redbud blooms die.

Then, it will be finished.

How did I know when to stop adding items to the grouping?
The question is answered by what went into the grouping.

1. Texture - White wicker basket, preserved moss, hand towel
2. Movement - Tall flowers, medium height bunny, low creamer
3. Theme - bunny, eggs for the season
4. Color - shades of white, monochromatic scheme
5. Number of items - an odd number
6. Focal point - bunny: focus created by central place,
pitchers pointing toward bunny, oblong flower vase
angled behind bunny, towel leads to bunny

Once I had all six of these elements,
I knew the grouping was completed.
