How Do You Add French Country Style?

Saturday, November 16, 2019

How do you add French Country style to a room? Two pieces of furniture that add immediate French Country style to a room are a toile chair and a Provence style wood chest. Cover the chair in a blue and white toile print and paint the cabinet in navy to use a classic French color combination.

Yes, even a laundry room becomes French Country style with those two pieces of furniture.

Toile Pantry Update | Key Hooks

Saturday, August 17, 2019

Updating an uninspiring pantry painted pink began with white paint and a beautiful toile wallpaper. Adding new black iron double hooks to hold spare keys was the next step. A tip for simplifying where to drill the holes for the screws is based on a brilliant tip for an easy way to hang a print or mirror on a wall.

While the pantry is small, the size of a closet, updating it with all my plans is more like updating a large room over several weeks. Not because of the size of the pantry, but because each new change sparked an idea for yet another change.

Take a look at how the pantry looked BEFORE updates began earlier this summer.

French Country Pantry Makeover

Thursday, July 25, 2019

{Disclosure: If you purchase items from Botanic Bleu, I receive compensation for your purchase. See my Disclosure and Privacy Policy for more information.}

While cleaning the pantry, a bad stain on the sheetrock made it obvious the pantry needed a makeover even though I already knew the pantry was getting a makeover. A French Country makeover . . .  with the perfect opportunity to add a beautiful blue and white toile wallpaper inside the pantry.

Inspiration for a toile wallpapered pantry came from The French Nest Company interior designer on her Instagram account. Her colors and pattern are not what I used for my pantry, but seeing her French-style papered pantry sparked the idea to use a toile pattern in my pantry.

French Country Easter Plate Stand

The French Country plate stand in the kitchen sunspace has a little brown toile bunny for Easter decor this Spring.

The plate stand was a plant stand, but now houses my set of white dishes and usually has a few accents to celebrate the current season of the year.

Pantry Makeover Plans

Spring is not the only time for deep cleaning a house. After taking a discerning look at my kitchen pantry, I realized a deep cleaning and makeover were way past overdue.

It has only been 30 years since the interior was painted.

French Country Summer Swing Loft

Thursday, June 21, 2018

Welcome to the swing loft all decked out for summer with French Country decor. Almost everything new to the swing loft was in other rooms in my house, except for the new French Country white garden urn. And a new little lampshade.

This spring has been a very good season for finding new French Country items to mix with my existing decor.

3 Changes to a French Country Bathroom

Thursday, March 26, 2015

French Country magazines published here in the USA
remind me of the homes, furniture, architecture,
dishes, linens, fabrics, gardens,
and the list just goes on and on...
of things that mesmerize me each time I travel through France.

Larger and larger numbers of blogs devote posts
showcasing French Country and how to get the look.

Equipped with these excellent resources with detailed photographs
and often authentic commentary by French writers,
I study the elements of French Country and continue
to replace, to rearrange, and to update rooms in my house.
Each time I make a change,
I look at my inspiration photos to capture a French feel.

Slowly over time the American Country feel of
my house has been replaced with a French Country style
that continues to change.

Changes over the past two years in the master bathroom
created a French Country style to the bathroom.

Last year a white child's chair held French lavender sachets and
a lavender embroidered towel from France.
The little chair is from an antique store and
was a Christmas present from my husband several years ago.

The wire basket with its white fabric lining has a French feel.
Always looking for a bargain,
I was excited to find this wire basket at HomeGoods last year.

While the pieces emulate French farmhouse,
I decided to rearrange existing pieces to create a
less French farmhouse and more French salon look.

Look at the difference three changes made.

The same space with the same lavender embroidered towel
now looks more elegant French Country than French farmhouse.

The ottoman with its curved wooden legs and
blue and white toile fabric replaced the small white chair.
Blue and white contrast cording accentuates the
curves in the cushion's shape and the curves in the wood.
Previously the ottoman sat in the master bedroom
with a chair covered in matching blue and white toile.

A large ruffled-edge flower pot sits where the
round metal basket with its white fabric liner once was.

A small grey concrete rose bundle replaced a bird card holder
on the windowsill.

Previously the rose bundle was part of last year's Christmas mantel.
See how it looked at French Christmas Mantel.

Soft blues, whites, and whitewashed wood
echo the faded colors of French salons.

More updates are in store for the small sink vanity next to this window.
White paint on the vanity, a new medicine cabinet,
and a new mirror are in the works.
I'm still looking for just the right French-inspired
medicine cabinet and new mirror.

Spirea Garden Party ~ French Style

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Spirea
is an old fashioned plant
that reminds me of
Victorian houses
and
garden parties.

Welcome to

The Scoop On ...
Spring Tablescapes

Enjoy the Spirea Garden Party,
à la French style,
en plein air.

I am excited to be part of

Top This Top That
Setting for Four
Botanic Bleu
Hymns and Verses
Unexpected Elegance

for the first day of the 3-day tour.

What better way to spend a warm Spring day
than having a glass of fresh mint tea
with a walnut and apple garden salad
next to the spirea plant in full bloom?

Folding wooden chairs with worn blue paint
are perfect for outdoor dining.
Gracie is hanging out under the table
hoping for a little treat.

After the long harsh winter, the spirea bush
is filled with the most blooms ever on long
graceful fronds that sway in the wind.

Pots of ivy and lobelia on the table add
to the garden party.

Tall clay pots without the usual wide rim at the top
are popping up in garden centers and stores.

Made in Italy in unfired red clay...
A little Navy #4 Valspar sample paint quickly
transformed the little pot into a blue one.

Stainless flatware with a fleur de lis design adds a French touch.

Standing in a small blue flower pot, the flatware is easy to reach.

Fresh iced mint tea quickly forms
condensation on the blue fleur de lis glass.
A warm 86° tied the high temperature for the date.

These warm days with fresh green grass, leafy trees, and flowers
are among the best weather days during the year.

A strong breeze keeps the weather pleasant,
but means that some weights are needed
to keep the linens from blowing away and
small things from blowing over.

A vintage brass watering ring anchors the silverware-laden blue pot.
A brass sprinkler head in the shape of a watering can
is hefty enough to hold linens in place.

Blue and white garden dishes with a new toile design are
extra special with their contrasting borders
and extra design details.
Each piece has fluted edges.

Square (really eight-sided) dinner plates,
salad plates, and bread plates
with a floral pattern accented by
a bird with outstretched wings
are reminiscent of antique French designs.
Only we know that these did not come from a
French flea market.
HomeGoods is our little secret.

Round soup/cereal bowls have a surprise in the bottom...
the little bird ready for flight!

Dishes...
Bleu et blanc vaisselle...
A passion all my life...
To find unusual shapes,
with so many details,
and in so many pieces,
is a thrill!
The  small square condiment bowls
are one of those unusual pieces
that make a pattern extra special.

Walnut and apple garden salad is my favorite salad
anytime of the year and especially for a garden party.

Feta cheese and raspberry walnut vinaigrette
add just the right zing!

(Paul Newman's is my favorite.)

Iced mint tea pairs perfectly with the garden salad.
An overturned flower pot keeps the tea in easy reach.

French linen kitchen towels serve as table runners
for the final touch of France in the
Spirea Garden Party.

Come back anytime to sit for awhile
in a blue wooden chair
and to drink a glass of iced mint tea.
