Silos Baking Co Cupcakes

Tuesday, December 20, 2016

Have you heard about the Silos Baking Co. in Waco, Texas? You know, the bakery that is part of Joanna and Chip Gaines Magnolia company? If you are a Fixer Upper fan, you probably know that Joanna L O V E S cupcakes, and her Silos Baking Co. sells her favorites.

The second week in December, a small group of us traveled to Waco to see the Magnolia store all decked out in its Christmas finery for a little Christmas shopping. Waco is about 80 minutes south of my house, and a day trip is an easy drive with plenty of time for shopping before heading back home.

The Silos Baking Co. is in a small building adjacent to the larger Magnolia store complex. We traveled on a Monday, one of the days with the least number of shoppers. However, this photo is misleading. There was a line of customers waiting to go into the small bakery. When the others saw me trying to take a photo, they graciously waited outside the camera view.

The patio to the Magnolia store entrance adjoins the outdoor dining patio for the Silos Baking Co. and has a special place for people to take photos under the #Miles To Magnolia arch. I heard another customer in the Magnolia store check-out line tell the clerk that she had flown to Dallas, then driven to Waco, from Michigan, just to shop at the Magnolia store.... # miles was 1335. She was excited to be there, and said it was worth the trip. Yes, she had bags of goodies she was buying.

Of course, she had the added bonus of leaving behind the wintry Michigan weather for the great weather in Texas. The day we were there the weather was spectacular with clear blue skies and mild temperatures in the low 60s.

The bakery is inside an old building that the Gaines renovated to become the bakery. Signature white subway tile lines the walls, and the floor is a gorgeous herringbone-pattern wood.

The bakery is a working bakery with employees wearing the blue striped aprons and going back and forth through the arch-topped swinging BAKERY door.

Rows of cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, and cookies fill the vintage-looking display cases. Could the cupcake flavors have cuter names than nuts + bolts and shiplap

I was tempted to try the nuts+bolts or shiplap, but went with two of my favorite flavors instead. Strawberry Cream and Lemon Lavender won out.

Two cupcakes must be the most popular number of cupcakes to buy because these adorable functional boxes hold exactly two cupcakes in a special insert that holds two cupcakes upright.

A beautiful patio dining area was filled with people enjoying their cupcakes, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and coffee. You can see the entire bakery building.

My two cupcakes made it safely home in the special carrier box, but did not last more than a couple of hours after getting home. Both cupcakes were scrumdiddlyumptious, almost worth the drive to Waco for no other reason than to buy more cupcakes.  A L M O S T.

Cupcakes this special deserved a reindeer pick decoration before being devoured.

The next time I travel to the Magnolia store in Waco, I know to buy more than two cupcakes. Wonder if they have special boxes for a half-dozen?

Yes, I bought more than cupcakes, and will share photos of the Magnolia store later.
