Blue Christmas Laundry Room

Sunday, November 24, 2019

Do you decorate your laundry room for Christmas? Here it is, not even the end of November, and I couldn't wait to decorate my newly renovated laundry room for Christmas... with BLUE!

I didn't go overboard with Christmas decorations, but there is no mistake the laundry room is spruced up for Christmas.

After finishing the laundry room makeover as part of the One Room Challenge™ this Fall, my brother-in-law, ever the skeptic, casually commented about now having another space to decorate. And, was I going to decorate it for Christmas?

Why, yes, dear brother-in-law, I did decorate the laundry room for Christmas.

The new Christmas decorations all began with his wife, my sister. She bought several new navy and white Christmas wrapping items... paper, bags, tissue... and thought I should wrap presents in them and display them in the laundry room to match the new navy cabinets.

I have the navy and white Christmas wrapping materials, but decided to use them someplace else. You will see a whole post about presents wrapped in blue and white Christmas wrapping.

Let's talk about why the laundry is decorated so early for Christmas. First of all, these gorgeous blue bottle brush trees in perfect shades of blue for the laundry showed up at Target... and were disappearing before my very eyes.

The short navy bottle brush trees were in the "dollar spot" just inside the front door. When I saw them, there were only two navy ones left at the closest Target. The next day my sister and I went to another Target where I found two more small navy bottle brush trees.

The taller bottle brush trees with gold bases are also from Target, but from another section of the store. There were several colors and sizes of bottle brush trees in that section, but were quickly disappearing as shoppers snapped them up... me included.

The blue goes perfectly with the antique blue seltzer bottle from a Paris flea market.

I was too excited to stash the new decor away in a closet. Do you know how hard it is to find blue Christmas decorations... and at a reasonable price? Since bottle brushes will not wilt or die from lack of water, I decorated the open shelves the night and next day I brought home them home.

Why stash them away just to search for them later?

For the past few years, I have loved seeing small evergreen seedlings used as Christmas decor by people who live in alpine regions in the United States and Canada. Early this week I found Colorado spruce and other evergreen seedlings at my favorite Dallas nursery, Nicholson and Hardy.

Since this is a potted seedling, it will live longer than a cut live tree. I believe it will do well all the way to Christmas and beyond, especially if I set it outside on my potting bench periodically. I do not plan to plant it outside next Spring because our summers are too hot for spruce trees to survive. Instead, I will keep it potted to move inside and outside as needed.

TIP: Buy live Christmas plants as soon as you see them in nurseries and garden centers. You can keep them outside, in the shade, and well-watered, until you want to use them inside as decorations.

Very likely, the nurseries may not be getting any more of the plants for Christmas. By buying early, you get the best selection.

Another find from Target two or three years ago is the L-O-N-G navy and white knitted stocking, another perfect color item for the navy and white laundry room.

Decorating early with stockings and a couple of ornaments is not a problem like decorating early with cut trees and flowers that wilt and die before Christmas, if set out too early.

Laundry rooms are off the beaten path for visitors which means only family will see these early Christmas decorations.

I need to complete as much early decorating as possible since I have a small pop-up Christmas shop, French Country Christmas Event, each year that takes a lot of my time during late Fall through the first two weeks of December.

I will be hosting a couple of Christmas parties this year the first two weeks of December and need my decorating finished well before Christmas. A small artificial tree in a blue and white scrolled flower pot is another early decor item in the laundry room that will last throughout the entire holiday season.

One room down. More to come.

Christmas tree shopping is one my exciting favorite events every year. Every few days in late November, I drive by all the local tree lots slowly to see their progress and to see if they have their trees yet. I bought two fresh-cut table-top trees this week! One is for the front porch, and the other is for the garden shed/shop. I may have been the first customer for the table-top trees!

Dear friends, I hope you enjoy the season and all the excitement the season brings.
